FanGraph Feature Focus: Customizing the Dashboard

As promised last Thursday, this week’s first Featured Feature highlights a Member-exclusive feature of FanGraphs: dashboard customization. The dashboard is the collection of cards that you see when you first open the player page, and the first table of statistics.
The default view of the dashboard for Non-Members includes the Quick Look, RosterResource and News cards, with different stat tables depending on whether the player is hitting:

Or call:

If you’re a FanGraphs member, however, you can customize both the cards above and the stats table to your heart’s content. In the upper right corner of the player page, just below the player area, there is an “Open Settings” button:
You are not a FanGraphs Member
It appears that you are not yet a FanGraphs Member (or signed in). We’re not mad, just disappointed.
We get it. You want to read this article. But before we let you get back to it, we’d like to point out a few good reasons why you should become a Member.
1. Free Viewing! We will not mistake you for this ad, or any other.
2. Unlimited topics! Non-Members only get to read 10 free articles per month. Members are never cut off.
3. Dark mode and classic mode!
4. Custom player page dashboards! Choose the player cards you want, the way you want.
5. One-click data export! Use our predictions and leaderboards for your personal projects.
6. Remove images from the home page! (Honestly, this doesn’t sound that good to us, but other people wanted it, and we like to give our Members what they want.)
7. More Steam guesses! We have offer, percentage, and context neutral predictions available only to members.
8. Get the FanGraphs Walk-Off, a custom year-end review! Find out how you used FanGraphs this year, and how that compares to other Members. Don’t fall prey to FOMO.
9. Weekly mailbag column, for Members only.
10. Help support FanGraphs and all of our staff! Our members give us valuable resources to improve the site and bring new features!
We hope you’ll consider Membership today, for yourself or as a gift! And we realize that this has been a very long marketing article, so we’ve removed all other ads from this article. We didn’t want to overdo it.

Because hitters and pitchers have different card options, their settings must be changed separately. In both areas, you can choose between displaying three or six cards, and you can change which card is in the three-by-one or three-by-2 grid by selecting different cards from the drop-down selectors:

To see all the cards except the set six, you can always go to the “Dashboard – All Cards” page under the menus on the left side of the player page. This page is visible to non-Members, but only Members can rearrange the cards displayed on the page:

As for the stats dashboard, that’s even more customizable than the cards, as we have a ridiculously large number of stats to choose from. To customize the stats dashboard, you can click the green “Custom” button above the stats table (yours will say “Customize” if set to default), or go to fangraphs.com/settings. That will open a customization page, with a few folders containing the math options on the left and the ones you’ve currently selected on the right:

Selecting a figure and clicking on the arrow icon on the right will move it down to the bottom of the figures you selected. You can then edit where it is displayed on your dashboard using the up and down arrows. The top figure will be the one on the far left of your custom table. The first folder, labeled “Miscellaneous,” also has a line break option that you can insert between as many figures as you like.
To remove a figure from your list of figures, simply select the figure you would like to remove using the check boxes and press the “X” button. To start over completely, use the button below that looks like a list with an X next to it. Your changes won’t be saved until you click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the menu, so if you’d rather not go through the steps to undo your edits, you can refresh the page and it will revert to any of your stats before you made the changes.
Changes made here will apply to all other player pages until you change the selected stats again. If you’d like to create a report for a single player or set of players, the Custom Reports feature within our leaderboards is what you’re looking for. Picks are at the top of the leaderboards:

Clicking on “Custom Report” will open a menu similar to the one used to customize stats on player pages, while clicking on “Custom Players” allows you to select any players you like:

Non-Members are limited to 10 figures, so you can’t do anything as good as this unless you’re a Member:

Members also have the ability to export to Excel for in-depth analysis. To become a Member, register here.
