Jordan Smith entered his rookie season on the PGA Tour with one major goal: to play a second season.
“Obviously it’s my first year here, and we’ve played a lot, we should have played a lot. Keeping our card this year was our goal,” Smith said after his season at Colonial. “We got off to a really good start, which is really exciting to see. So, yeah, I’m just going to try to continue there and try to get into some of the playoff events and see what happens.”
The Englishman, 33, played well in his first season on the PGA Tour. He has made 10 of 15 cuts and finished third at the Valspar Championship back in March.
But after 65 rounds at Colonial, Smith enters the weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge with a shot-shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Michael Thorbjornsen and Ryan Gerard. He is 36 holes away from the two-year exemption and his first PGA Tour win.
But there is a lot of golf to be played before Smith can call himself a PGA Tour winner.
“It’s going to be a new experience for us leading for the first time,” Smith said of leading the weekend. “So, yes, I’m happy. I’ll stick to what I’ve been doing for the last two days. Yes, just see what happens, I won’t force anything, I won’t rush anything, I’ll see what happens and enjoy it.”
