Danny Rohl is now in the hunt to land the Rangers’ big-money star

After missing out on Champions League football, Rangers will face a battle to land big-money star Djeidi Gassama this summer.

The Rangers could lose a star offensive line

There was a time when it looked like a season of so much promise for the Rangers. Danny Rohl had settled into his position at Ibrox and any failures under Russell Martin were long forgotten. It even looked like the Gers could defend their first Scottish Premiership title since 2021. However, that quickly collapsed.

When the season came to an end, Rangers found themselves in third place and Rohl found himself at loggerheads with James Tavernier. The fact that the 49ers have been forced to publicly reinstate their manager since then tells the story of how the internal battle unfolded.

It could be the start of a long summer for those at Ibrox after missing out on Champions League football. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Rohl is keen to land Gassama, who is set to seek further interest after the January transfer window.

Rangers have decided not to sell the winger in the winter window, despite an offer from AS Monaco up to the £10m-mark. Now, some months later, they could fight to recapture him.

O’Rourke told Football Insider: “Gassama, as you said, there was little interest in him in January. I expect to see you again in the summer window.

“Missing out on the league title and qualifying for the Champions League will be a big mistake for Rangers. It makes it easier to get offers from other clubs for their players and they may find it hard to turn them down like they did in the January window.”

Guardians must fight to keep Gassama

The cash flow will be tempting for the 49ers this summer, but if they want to keep Rohl, they should do everything they can to keep Gassama.

The German is a huge fan of the winger, as he told reporters at the start of his tenure: “He has to step up his workload to be able to do it for 90 minutes, but that’s normal if you haven’t played a lot in the past.

“But he’s got a weapon, he’s good one-on-one, and he’s quick to make good moves between the line and the pocket. I’m happy for him.

“He had a big chance in the first half with the transition, and we’ve talked before about ball areas. We’ve talked to the young players about coming and showing what they can do, and doing that step by step. He was good in training, that’s why we took him.”

With nine goals and six assists in all competitions this season, the numbers again suggest the 22-year-old has plenty to offer Rangers.
