Liverpool beat Chelsea and Bayern Munich to sign ‘full deal reached’

Liverpool have won the race to sign big players, beating a number of top clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, to sign their first signing of the summer.

Slot under pressure at Liverpool as sack calls ring out

It has been a season of great frustration at Anfield.

12 months ago, Liverpool were champions of England, riding on Arne Slot’s impressive debut campaign and investing over £400m in signings designed to keep them in the top flight.

Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitiké and Alexander Isak all arrived in a summer that should herald a new era of continued dominance. Instead, it has produced the most shocking decline in the club’s modern history.

Liverpool sit in fifth place with 59 points and have the most secure Champions League title except for a strange final day, and Slot will be relieved by that fact.

The 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa last Friday was the latest in a string of disappointing results that have defined this campaign – a 4-0 humiliation at Man City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, a 4-1 drubbing by PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in the Champions League.

At one point, Liverpool lost nine of their 12 games in all competitions, their worst run since 1953/54.

The pressure on Slot has been great.

West Ham's Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen’s next move is being sought as Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United and Newcastle eye the West Ham star

The England international could be one of many Hammers on the way.

Large sections of the fans have turned against the Dutchman, criticizing his cautious approach and his inability to get the best out of the expensive team he has.

FSG have been linked with players to fill the gaps, including Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso, both of whom were reportedly discussed internally before Alonso committed to Chelsea.

As things stand, however, the club has decided to stick with Slot, at least for now.

In the face of this chaos, the recruiting team has been quietly continuing the long-term planning that FSG has always prioritized.

And on Friday, the first part of the summer business was confirmed by reliable media sources.

Liverpool have agreed a deal for Colombian player Samuel Martinez

According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Samuel Martinez from Colombian club Atlético Nacional ‘with a full agreement reached’.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder will join the club on a five-year contract worth around $1m, with a buy-out clause included.

Martinez will stay at Nacional for now and move to Merseyside in 2027 when he turns 18, in line with FIFA’s child transfer rules.

The agreement represents a significant coup.

Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Benfica were all interested in Martinez, but Liverpool decided to pull out of the race after Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra first reported the deal.

Fabrizio Romano and Paul Joyce of The Times confirmed the deal.

Martinez played for Colombia at the CONMEBOL U17 South American Championship last month, wearing the number 10 shirt and registering three assists as his country beat Argentina 4-0 in the final to lift the trophy.

Standing at 6ft tall and blessed with excellent close control, vision and long-range shooting ability, he is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from Colombian football in years.

It’s a signing that speaks to Liverpool’s future rather than its present – a £740,000 investment in a youngster who won’t be kicking a ball at Anfield for at least another year.

But in this season where so much has gone wrong, the reminder that the club can still win the recruitment battles for Europe’s biggest players is not a bad thing.
