Leeds have made a £39m transfer offer for the Wolves star in response

Leeds United are a Premier League club, and they are here to stay.
That may not sound like much, but after three seasons away from the top flight and the chaos of the Championship years, to survive at the first attempt should be given real credit.
The 14 points and 44, which are likely to come, represent a strong comeback for the newly promoted side, and Daniel Farke’s men can go into the summer knowing that the hard part – the waiting – is over.
It was not always comfortable.
There were sticky patches, tight boundaries and nervous afternoons along the way. But Leeds got the job done when it mattered, and their safety was assured with games to spare.
Contrast that with Tottenham and West Ham, who are still sweating it out heading into the final day, and the picture looks much healthier at Elland Road.

In talks: Leeds submit bid for new Elland Road signing Ethan Ampadu
Daniel Farke could stumble upon his new Ethan Ampadu if Leeds United secure a free deal for the attacking star.
For a team that many said were struggling, this was a campaign to be proud of, especially after reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup since 1987.
Now comes the interesting part.
With top-flight status secured, Leeds can plan with clarity and ambition. The recruitment department has been working behind the scenes for weeks, and the aim is clear: add the quality needed to enter the top division next season and make this more than just a matter of survival.
The one target they were looking for, however, slipped through their fingers.
Wolves star Joao Gomes is responding to Leeds transfer offers
According to Brazilian journalist Pablo Oliveira, Leeds have made a bid for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, but the 25-year-old has turned it down.
It wasn’t just Leeds who were left disappointed.
Zenit, Atalanta and Galatasaray have all submitted offers for the Brazil international, with some of their offers described as ‘financially better’ than those ultimately accepted.
Gomes chose Atlético Madrid, viewing the move to the Spanish capital as a unique opportunity that he was not willing to pass up.
It’s hard to blame him.
Atletico are closing in on a £39m deal for the player who has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League since arriving from Flamengo in January 2023.
Gomes has played 34 league games this season – more than any other Wolves player – contributing one goal and one assist while racking up nearly 2,750 minutes of action.
Even in a team that finished low, his quality did not often drop.
Wolves initially valued Gomes at around £50m, but the reduction has weakened their negotiating position significantly.
The club’s eight-year stay in the Premier League came to a bitter end – they lost their first five games, never relegated, and became only the second club in history to lose all 19 opponents in a single campaign.
With soccer’s financial situation now biting, selling Gomes at a reduced price was always the most likely outcome.
For Leeds, missing out is disappointing, but the fact that they were in the discussion tells its own story.
The profile of Gomes – aggressive, intelligent, comfortable in possession, the full Brazilian international – would have represented a serious statement of intent.
The idea Leeds were willing to put a tangible offer on the table for a player of that caliber suggests there is both food and budget for sensible business this summer.
The question now is where do they turn next.
The club’s wider plans remain to be seen, but the ambition is palpable.
