‘He should be condemned, burned at the stake’

Former Marseille striker Christophe Dugarry says Mason Greenwood should be “burned at the stake” after his poor performance in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Nantes.

Greenwood was reinstated to the starting XI after being left on the bench against Nice last week but failed to capitalize as Marseille’s disappointing season hit its peak.

The defeat left OM seventh in Ligue 1 and struggling to qualify for next season’s European competition.

Dugarry was furious with Greenwood, in particular, describing the former Englishman as a “disgrace”.

Speaking on the Rothen s’enflamme program of RMC Sport, he said: “It’s a shame what he did against Nantes, I saw him go, there were times when I looked at him and he was just pretending.

“I don’t understand how anyone can protect him. He should be sentenced, burned at the stake, at least he pretends to be.” [to care]. He throws ‘go to hell’ in everyone’s face. You are an absolute disgrace, you are pathetic.”

Greenwood was given a chance by Marseille

Greenwood was given a chance to resurrect his career in the south of France after his strike at Manchester United ended abruptly when he was charged with attempted rape, control and coercion and assault causing bodily harm after videos emerged on social media.

The charges were later dropped after new facts came to light.

Dugarry believes the 24-year-old, who has been linked away from the Stade Velodrome at the end of the season, should do more to show his gratitude to Marseille for giving him a chance.

“I appeal to his pride,” he added. “This boy was struggling, he made a big mistake before Marseille signed him, he would never play football again, everyone did everything to give this boy a chance, I feel ashamed of him.

“He is the leader of this group, everyone depends on him, when he is not there, everyone complains about his absence, and what does he give back after sacrificing himself?

“He will make money for the club but no one will cry for him.”

La Provence is also coming hard in Greenwood

The local newspaper La Provence was also disgusted by Greenwood’s performance against Nantes, even though they angered his teammates, who gave them a zero out of 10 in their player ratings.

In their assessment of Greenwood, the newspaper said: “It’s easy to see why the baby of English football found himself on the bench last Sunday.

“While people are quick to throw out the term ‘professional misconduct’, Greenwood’s behavior on Saturday was clear.

“Disgraceful from start to finish, he felt he had to wander around after a bunch of changes, crying when his colleagues didn’t pass him, or pretending to be in the circus by trying unnecessary tricks to entertain himself when the future of the financial group was at stake.

“In other circumstances, he would have been worth half a point for at least being able to tie his boots.”

Marseille boss Beye has no defenses about the shocking display

Teams in Saudi Arabia are linked with Greenwood, who despite his recent problems has scored 25 goals and added 10 assists in 48 games this season.

Marseille, now under Habib Beye after the departure of Roberto De Zerbi, face Le Havre and Rennes in their last two Ligue 1 games and may need to win both to qualify for Europe next season.

Beye was not happy with his team’s efforts in Nantes, he said: “I can’t analyze it as there was no performance, no explanation.

“I don’t know [if the players gave up]. But we had nothing. This is unacceptable and difficult to explain given the work we did during the week. I could take out 80% or 90% of the team at halftime.”
