Stan Collymore warns Liverpool against signing Aston Villa’s “terrible” star

Stan Collymore has criticized Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa for his recent performances and warned suitors against signing him amid links to Liverpool.

Collymoore hot on the heels of Konsa despite Emery’s praise

Unai Emery is having a real defensive selection problem, with the Villa boss recently taking time to praise all the defenders currently available.

Emery says:We have four very good defenders. They are separated. Lindelof is always ready to play and when he does, he adds to us his experience, qualities and ability to perform at the highest level.

“Pau doesn’t change either. So does Tyrone, although on Saturday he wasn’t good at all, because of some pain, that’s why he didn’t play on Sunday. But Pau answers and if not, there’s Tyrone. Konsa doesn’t change either.

“I think now we have four defenders who get the game we need. I’m very happy with them.”

As the Spaniard has been blessed with options at the back, he has changed in recent weeks, Konsa failed to come off the bench during the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Collymore has hit back at Konsa’s “consistent” performance at Aston Villa, and believes his lack of performance is what prompted Emery to drop him.

The former striker also urged Liverpool not to sign the midfielder.

“There was also talk of Ezri Konsa coming from Aston Villa, but he had a few bad months, so much so that he was taken out of the game against Nottingham Forest. It is expected that he will start for England in the World Cup, but if he continues in this way, that will drive away buyers.”

In fact, the criticism seems harsh, given that the 28-year-old has been leading the Aston Villa side in average blocks (0.9) and clearances (3.6) per 90 Premier League games this season.

Villa were unable to keep a clean sheet in Konsa’s absence, drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest at The City Ground, with Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof not pulling any punches.

Pau Torres

Torres has lost most of his competitive duels against Tricky Trees, although he has been matched with possession, in a solid, but not spectacular, manner.

Pau Torres vs Nottingham Forest key stats

  • 71/77 passes completed (92%)

  • Duels (won) 8 (3)

  • 1 hit

  • 1 blocked shot

Victor Lindelof

Lindelof, on the other hand, did not take part in the game, competing in one duel in the entire game, despite playing the full 90 minutes.

The 31-year-old has completed two defensive moves, so it will be interesting to see if Emery calls up Konsa for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Bologna on Thursday night.

Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa
