Sean Walker Becomes Hurricanes’ Blue Line Anchor This Season – Hockey Writers –

Going into 2025-26, there were hopes that Sean Walker would make an impact in his second season with the Carolina Hurricanes. He finished his first season with five goals and 16 points after playing 82 games. With two games left in the season, he has come up more than his fair share of contributions, especially given what the defense has been through.

Walker Anchoring the Hurricanes’ Blue Line

Throughout the season, the Hurricanes blue line was decimated by injuries. From Jaccob Slavin’s 30-plus game losing streak to a team that had to call up their ninth and 10th defensemen on the depth chart, Walker was the one called up. Walker is tied for ninth in assists (21) and 12th in points (30). What makes that stand out is that all of these are at a high level, along with his nine goals.

Although Walker is best known for his defensive skills, this has been his best offensive season with 80 games and his average ice time of 21:47 is also the highest of his career. Back in November, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said when asked about Walker so far this season, “What we’ve asked him to do, the minutes, the matchups, he’s done everything.

Going back to the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Hockey Writers asked Brind’Amour after the team’s second-round Game 3 win against the Washington Capitals about Walker’s performance. The head coach said at the time, “I’m glad you mentioned Walks. I think he’s been under the radar, really, all year. Whatever we ask him to do, he fills in or carries every night. He was leading back there. He was really solid.”

Last season, Walker was learning a new system and playing more minutes in the third pairing with Shayne Gostisbehere before seeing time with Slavin in the playoffs. At the time, there was a sense that he might get a bigger role in 2025-26. Finally, that happened; even with the injury, it felt like he was up there from the start.

Overall, this has been the best season of Walker’s career, and he has three more seasons left on his five-year, $18 million contract. It’s been said before, but the average annual value (AAV) of $3.6 million is a steal for the Hurricanes for what Walker brings.

Throughout the season, it’s been clear that Walker has become more comfortable in the Hurricanes’ system, as well as being able to move forward in transition and think ahead when attacking the opposition’s zone. In addition, being able to play in all situations helped him to be balanced. All in all, Walker has shown why the Hurricanes signed him to the deal they did, and it’s paying off.

With two games left before the playoffs, Walker will be called up as the Hurricanes look for another deep season for Brind’Amour. There’s no telling who he’ll be paired with, but in the end, he’ll be doing what he’s done all season: anchor the blue line. Despite all the injuries, Walker has been on the rise for the Hurricanes and will look to continue that when the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin on April 18 and 19. Regardless of who they face in Round 1, keep an eye on Walker for success once again without the scoresheet.
