Mainz chief responds publicly to Liverpool as Anfield chiefs plot Sano move

Liverpool have been forced to rethink some of their transfer plans following the rejection of Yan Diomande in recent weeks, but have received a major push to sign another Bundesliga star.

The priority at Anfield is to replace Mohamed Salah this summer. That’s why Diamond was their top target and why Bradley Barcola has been in their sights for the past few weeks.

Once that issue is resolved, however, the focus is likely to shift to midfield and that’s where Kaishu Sano could be key. Liverpool are reportedly interested in the 25-year-old and have received public encouragement from Mainz.

Honesty

Not much more reliable than the Mainz boss himself and Sano’s pursuit of Liverpool makes sense. As talented as Ryan Gravenberch is, he is not a traditional No.6. The Japanese international will provide exactly that along with the Dutchman.

Finance

Although absurd figures have been flying in the midfield market, Sano represents a modern bargain at €60m (£51m) and the Reds could take full advantage.

Understanding

Regarding Andoni Iraola’s fitness, Sano is the perfect option. The 25-year-old has received plenty of praise in Germany, including from former Mainz coach Bo Henriksen, who said: “Kaishu is a machine. He’s unbelievable. He’s fast and wins heads with his incredible jumps.”

Impact

Liverpool’s pursuit of the Mainz man could result in Premier League options like Alex Scott or Adam Wharton, which could open the way for Manchester United to move in. When it comes to price, however, the Reds could be the real winners.

There is still a lot of work to be done for any deal to happen, but the decision from Mainz is undoubtedly a start for all parties.

The chief of Mainz publicly responds to Sano’s interest

Speaking about his midfielder’s future, Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert admitted he would “consider” offers to sell Sano this summer in order to improve Liverpool.

“If the club comes with a request, we will consider it.” – Bungert

It is good news for Liverpool, who are targeting the Mainz star, who costs around €60m (£51m) in Germany – much cheaper than Premier League options.

“Unbelievable” Sano would be fine next to Gravenberch

The biggest criticism that could have been leveled at Liverpool last season was their lack of strength in midfield. It was completely out of character and ultimately cost Arne Slot his job.

The first thing Andoni Iraola has to change and he can change with the addition of Sano. Compared to the likes of Alex Mac Allister, the star of Mainz is much stronger and stronger without losing the important ability to hold.

The numbers are worse for Mac Allister, who endured the worst duel success last season against someone like Sano. Under Iraola, there will only be one winner if the last one comes.
