Spurs are holding talks to sign the world-class striker on a free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have well and truly stepped up in the transfer window. It has only been open for one day but they are starting to make their presence felt.
While Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have both arrived on free transfers, Spurs now plan to use a shedload to ensure they don’t fall as low as 17th in the Premier League table again.
Steps for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke and Manchester City’s Savinho are on the way but it’s not the start. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali may be on his way to north London but not to Arsenal as was widely reported during the build up to the summer window.
Instead, Spurs look to be taking the lead now. It has become an uphill battle to sign the Italian player. It is suspected that he and Roberto De Zerbi are close, both from the same part of Italy. This can be a little special.
That said, he’s not the only player with links to Italy who could be on his way to Tottenham.
The classy striker could join Tonali at Spurs
It wasn’t long ago that Ange Postecoglou criticized the Spurs management for their lack of ambition and lack of funding. Speaking to Overlap, the Aussie noted that “look at Pedro Neto, [Bryan] Mbeumo and [Antoine] Semenyo”, he was left with Dominic Solanke and three young people.
Those three young men were Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert.
Well, how times change. Now, it looks like they heard Ange’s message. Premier League proven players are on their way to Spurs and they are not just proven, they are real stars. Van Hecke has been one of the best defenders in the division in recent years, as has Senesi.
Tonali, however, would be the icing on the cake. This is a player that Manchester City are looking at as a different player than Elliot Anderson. It would be an Earthquake coup if they got a deal over the line.
The same can be said if they sign Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian will leave Turin on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree a new contract.
That has opened the way for other top clubs in Europe to enter and according to TEAMtalk, Spurs are at the table in this country.
They report that Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle have all discussed a move to the player’s camp. While the deal may be completed without a buyout fee, it is understood that Vlahovic’s salary demands are huge.
Indeed, he wants around £8m-a-year to join the equivalent of £150k-a-week.
How does Vlahovic compare to Dominic Solanke
Almost every area of the pitch was a concern for Spurs last season but it is very clear that they need to sign a better team in the area of their strikers.
Harry Kane left in the summer of 2023 and since then, it has been a sad story for the Lilywhites. When Kane became i the best striker in world football, winning two Bundesliga cups with Bayern Munich, Tottenham were almost relegated in previous seasons.
Spurs tried to offload Kane for Solanke and while no striker could emulate the England captain, the former Bournemouth man struggled after his £65m move.
The reality that they are paying that price looks worse and worse as the months go by. The striker scored 16 goals during his first campaign in north London but only nine of those goals came in league play.
2025/26 was a sad situation for Solanke who played only 15 league games, 11 of which were starts. In this process, this player, 28, scored only three goals in the league.
While there is much to admire about Chelsea’s young graduate, especially the way he is involved in the build-up, the truth of the matter is that for the money he earns, he hasn’t been good enough.
Because of this, although Vlahovic has endured his own problems in Italy, it could be much better. This is the player who a few years ago was described as “a more complete striker than Erling Haaland” by Serbian FA president Nenad Bjekovic, and as “one of the best strikers in the world” by Italian legend Luca Toni.

That last statement about his credentials as one of the best still holds true. Like Solanke, the Serb endured an injury-plagued campaign in which he made just 11 starts in Italy’s top flight. However, the 26-year-old has found form, scoring seven in 19 league games and ten in 23 overall.
The truth is that Vlahovic has been brutal in front of goal. The statistics back that up. He is more proven than Solanke, he has been doing it at the highest level for a long time as the Spurs striker is the best scorer above coming into the Championship.
Vlahovic’s set of attributes would suit the Premier League as well. He’s fast and powerful enough to scare any defense in the world. He is more present than Solanke and more importantly, he is a better goalscorer.
