There’s a harsh truth about gear: Almost everything has an expiration date — at least when it comes to high performance — and that’s especially true for your clubs.

1. The technology gap exceeds the design period of your set
“Iron technology is going through real leaps and bounds – face materials (multiple inserts, hollow bodies built), CG placement and variable face stiffness have dramatically changed forgiveness and distance over the past decade,” Maroun said. “A set designed five years ago is not ‘obsolete’ as it works with an older set of engineering assumptions. This is especially important if you are a medium to high handicapper, as forgiveness technology has advanced faster than blade/players-iron technology.”
2. Your throw has changed, but your equipment has stayed the same
“Shaft flex, lie angle and head design are all geared towards swing speed, angle of attack and tempo,” Maroun said. “Bodies change – strength, flexibility, injury history, even just years of cumulative change in training. Concussion isn’t about denigrating the club – it’s about demeaning it. This is one big ‘invisible’ reason people need to re-examine, and it has nothing to do with how clubs look or feel.”
3. Material fatigue changes performance before it is noticeable
“Grooves and surface materials gradually wear down under repeated impact stress, and loss of performance (spin, power transmission) often precedes any visible wear,” says Maroun. “That’s why ‘they still look good’ is not a reliable test – hearing and eyeball testing lags behind the actual wear of the devices.”
