10 players to watch in the World Cup

Away from sports stars and household names, the World Cup is an opportunity for some unknown players to put themselves on the football map.
From explosive players under the proverbial £100m summer transfer to midfield anchors, these 10 under-the-radar or fast-rising stars have been officially locked into the final 26-man squad and are set to light up the club’s ranks.
What is the name of the next group?
All caps and goals are correct as of June 3, 2026.
Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast / RB Leipzig)
Position: Winger / Forward
Age: 19 – 9 Caps / 3 Goals
Why are you watching him?
While Manchester United star Amad Diallo has dominated the Premier League hype, Diomande was recently crowned Bundesliga Rookie of the Season after scoring 12 league goals for Leipzig. The young sensation is currently at the center of a huge tug-of-war between Liverpool and trailing Champions League winners PSG.
His fearsome pace and brilliance make the Elephants one to watch in Group E.
Kenan Yildiz (Turkey / Juventus)
Position: Forward / Modified Wing
Age: 21 28 Caps / 5 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Turkey enter the tournament as the most exciting dark horse, and Yildiz is their undisputed creative pulse.
Operating on the left side or directly behind the striker, his low center of gravity, fearless direct running, and sharp shooting angles make him one of Serie A’s most valuable young assets.
Turkey will face Australia. Paraguay also hosts the United States in Group D.
Kevin Rodriguez (Ecuador / Union SG)
Position: Forward
Age: 26 – 31 Caps / 2 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Placed in a tough Group E alongside Germany and Ivory Coast, Ecuador will rely heavily on their threat at the break.
While veteran captain Enner Valencia – formerly of West Ham and Everton – remains the focal point, Rodríguez offers raw, chaotic energy and relentless defensive pressure from the front that turns low blocks into high-speed attackers.
Ismael Kone (Canada / Sassuolo)
Position: Box-to-Box Midfielder
Age: 24 – 38 Caps / 4 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Co-hosts carry a heavy weight of expectation on home soil in Vancouver and Toronto. While Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies is the poster boy, Kone is the main man in the engine room.
He learned to withstand intense pressure, ball handling, and tactical intelligence under Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille and now plays in Serie A. His ability in the middle allows Canada to pass safely out of deep defensive positions.
Ernest Nuamah (Ghana / Lyon)
Position: Right Winger
Age: 22 – 18 Caps / 4 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Nuamah is a classic, old-school opposite winger who thrives on picking apart defenders one by one before cutting inside on his devastating left foot. His burst of speed makes him Ghana’s main stretcher for opponents. If the back lines of the team’s division give him space on the edge of the box, he can turn a tight game on its head.
England, beware.
Oscar Bobb (Norway / Fulham)
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger
Age: 22 – 18 Caps / 2 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Opponents will come up with careful plans to double-team Erling Haaland and block Martin Odegaard, which is why Bobb is Norway’s last weapon.
After leaving the club for Fulham earlier this year, his first-time touches, high-level spatial awareness, and brilliance in tight spaces add a completely different dimension to the Norwegian attack.
Norway has not been to the World Cup since 1998 and will face France, Iraq and Senegal in Group I.
Gilberto Mora (Mexico / Club Tijuana)
Position: Attacking midfielder – 7 caps / 0 goals
Age: 17
Why are you watching him?
Mora enters the tournament holding a huge piece of history as the youngest player in 48 countries (at just 17 years and 240 days).
The Club Tijuana prodigy has completely taken over Mexican football with his incredible vision, fearlessness on the ball, and mature decision-making in the final third.
Working on home soil at the Estadio Azteca, he is highly recommended by local scouts to be El Tri’s last weapon off the bench when they need to open up a stubborn team defence.
Piero Hincapie (Ecuador / Bayer Leverkusen – on loan from Arsenal)
Position: Left Back or Centre-Back
Age: 24 – 51 Caps / 3 Goals
Why are you watching him?
After a great season at Arsenal, Hincapié will shine in the world. Versatile and strong in attack and in the back, Hincapie is the defensive rock of this exciting Ecuadorian side.
His modern tactical flexibility is top notch; equally comfortable orchestrating possession from the back three or tracking speedy wide men at left back.
He will be a certain person tasked with shutting down the heavy hitters in the big-bodied division.
Bilal El Khannouss (Morocco/Stuttgart)
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Number 10
Age: 22 – 35 Caps / 3 Goals
Why are you watching him?
Morocco surprised the world with their low-level defensive consistency and history in 2022, but El Khannouss represents their attacking revolution over the past four years.
A smooth, technically gifted playmaker, his rare vision and ability to carve stubbornly open defenses with sharp balls will be vital if the Atlas Lions are to claim a match rather than relying on counter-attacks.
He may have suffered back-to-back relegations with Leicester City but he shone during his loan spell with Stuttgart and is now set to leave for good.
Santiago Gimenez (Mexico / AC Milan)
Position: Forward Forward
Age: 25 – 47 caps / 6 goals
Why are you watching him?
After leaving the big club for AC Milan, Giménez is the perfect spearhead for his fellow athletes. He is an incredibly sharp number nine, who will shoulder the bulk of the goalscoring load for El Tri in front of a roaring Estadio Azteca crowd.
