The £160,000-a-week star is “about to join Spurs” but it’s not De Zerbi’s first choice

The “unbelievable” star is now set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for the first time in the summer, with an agreement being reached.

Roberto De Zerbi reveals plans to build a “new team”

Roberto De Zerbi achieved his first goal as Tottenham boss by leading his side to safety on Sunday, with Joao Palhinha’s first goal securing all three points against Everton, a result that condemned West Ham United to relegation from the Premier League.

However, despite winning the 2025 Europa League, it has been a turbulent few years for Spurs to say the least, finishing 17th in the past two seasons on the bounce, and the Italian has outlined his plans to reshape his squad this summer.

De Zerbi says: “From tonight we need to build a new team, we don’t need to change many players, we have 10, 11, 12 players who are ready to stay as players and people.

“Now we need to complete the squad with first class players because I suffered a lot but also the players, the board and the fans will not suffer like this like Tottenham Hotspur.”

It has since emerged that De Zerbi could sign his first summer contract.

Tottenham are now “set” to sign an “unbelievable” player.

In the latest update on X, reporter Ben Jacobs revealed that Andy Robertson is “close to joining Spurs”, the Scotland captain has reached an agreement to move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when his Liverpool contract expires.

A deal is in place, with the £160k-a-week left-back making his final appearance for the Reds in their 1-1 draw with Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

Last month, former midfielder Charlie Adam suggested Liverpool should keep Robertson, believing he is still a better player than fellow left-back Milos Kerkez.

Adam said: “I think you can put him up there as a football legend. He’s won every major trophy, he’s been there for nine years, his performances over the years have been amazing.

“And for me, I still think he’s the best left-back at the football club. He’s been one of Liverpool’s greatest defenders over time.”

The 32-year-old has made 332 appearances in the Premier League, while playing for the Reds and Hull City, who were recently promoted from the Championship, and has shown his attacking prowess with 12 goals and 60 assists.

Robertson appears set to join Tottenham, but last month it was revealed De Zerbi was keen to sign another option, namely AC Milan star Pervis Estupinan, who has Premier League experience, racking up four goals and 11 assists in 84 outings for Brighton & Hove Albion.
