Maple Leafs Stick With ‘Deep Due Diligence’ Answer When Asked About Chayka Lease – Hockey Writers – Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs officially introduced John Chayka as the franchise’s 19th general manager and Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor, but much of the focus during the press conference was on one theme: due diligence—and whether the organization has done enough of it.
MLSE CEO Keith Pelley made it clear that the Leafs are waiting for consideration regarding the hiring of Chayka. Chayka even mentioned it in a statement before answering questions. Given his past with the Arizona Coyotes and the circumstances that led to his departure from the NHL, it was probably the right move. He tried to come out ahead.
There were still questions, and many.
Despite questions from several members of the media, Pelley repeatedly emphasized that the organization had done “deep due diligence” and said they were very happy with where they were.
The Maple Leafs Say They’ve Done Their Homework
At the height of the game when the media was available, reporter Steve Simmons suggested that he do his own work. Simmons says he spoke to 20 people throughout the department and only one supported Chayka’s hiring. He says 19 said it was a “fake” and words such as “fraudster,” “liar,” and “dealer” were used. When asked how he could come up with a different position and respond to that, Pelley said, “We have to talk to different people.”
When asked how the team reached its decision after interviewing what Pelley said was about 27 people, the organization held firm on all findings that Chayka was a boy. When asked directly about concerns related to Chayka’s history, Pelley said he did not care that their research left the organization free.
Chayka was asked for specifics and would only say that he was young when he took the job, and the Coyotes were plagued by a lot of stability issues off the ice. ‘Things were missed.’ When it comes to hiring in Toronto, he said the interview process is “complete and exhausting.”
He added that he learned from what happened in Arizona, and it is better to move on from it.
So, Why Did the Maple Leafs Choose Chayka?
What set him apart, according to Pelley, was not only his vision of the modern NHL organization but also the confidence the Leafs built with their backcourt. Pelley says the team jumped at the chance to hire him when Sundin was on board.
Chayka viewed his time away from the league as a period of growth and an opportunity to see things through a different lens. He emphasized that the NHL has changed and evolved with it, especially in areas such as statistics, structure, and integrated decision-making. He also understands that in a market like Toronto, words mean little without results. Pelley seemed to agree that this was a good thing.
“I’m human,” Chayka admitted, noting that everything she experienced made her better prepared for this opportunity.
When Pelley stood behind Chayka and his decision to hire him, he really strengthened the relationship between Chayka and Sundin. Calling the tandem “awesome,” Pelley said their long-standing relationship and mutual respect helped solidify the decision. Chayka is the better of the two, but their roles will be collaborative.
Both Chayka and Sundin want it to be this way. Chayka explained “the best idea wins” and the two men aligned on what needed to happen to build a winning team.
That will include working with a strong core—including stars like Auston Matthews—but also making necessary, inevitable program changes. He has started discussions with key people including Matthews and coach Craig Berube as he works to better understand the team from within.
The biggest takeaway from the publisher is that the Maple Leafs trust this, while the media and fans may not. The Maple Leafs know these hires raise questions, but they stand firm behind their decisions. The “deep due diligence” they did will have to be enough for the fans… at least for now.
