Ellise Rymer has been crowned English Ladies Champion at Moor Park Golf Club, after a thrilling final against Isabella Kent.
It marks a remarkable week for Lincoln golfer Rymer, who qualified for the AIG Women’s Open Final Qualifying on Monday, ahead of four days of golf in Hertfordshire where she became the national champion, joining a list of previous winners including Bronte Law and Trish Johnson.
He said: “It’s unbelievable, I feel like I’ve worked really hard on my golf over the last few years and today it all came together, so I’m really happy to win.
“It was a dream come true. Playing well on Monday and winning here today really topped it all off. This is my biggest achievement to date – my last big win was the Scottish U16s in 2021, so long ago!”
“It’s great to cross the line and I think this puts me in a good position going into August when I go back to the college season (in the USA).”
In a thrilling final against Castle Royle’s Kent, Rymer made an early birdie in a match where there was no hole to go until the 18th. Kent made a stunning eagle from the green on the par-5 13th to pull level, before Rymer regained the lead on the 15th.
Despite a wayward shot on the 16th, Rymer made a remarkable recovery to force a half, as Kent was unable to get up-and-down on the edge of the green. Rymer had a chance to make a mammoth drive count on 17 but both made pars – however he sealed the deal with a good tee shot and rolled in a birdie putt on 18 – just as he did in the morning semi-final, to win the title.
He added: “Beating Jasmine in the quarter-final yesterday was really tough. I was very tired and that gave me the motivation to go into today and this morning’s match against England girls squad member Mia Ingham – she’s really good, so I’m really happy to get through that.”
Asked where he would put the trophy, and the celebrations, the 21-year-old added: “I’m sure mum will find a place for the trophy – maybe on the dining room table for a while!
Earlier in the day in the semi-finals, Kent flew to 2-up against Summer Carash but the Minchinhampton golfer chipped in, before Kent went 3-over to 11. Carash won the next two holes to put the pressure on but Kent pulled away to win 14 and 15 and close at 1.
The other semi-final saw Rymer go 2-over from two, but Mia Ingham battled back to be all-square on 11. After halving the next three holes, an errant tee shot on 15 cost Ingham, before Rymer hit a beautiful birdie putt on the par-5 16th. A monster drive from Ingham came just shy of a birdie on the 17th to put him down for the final, but Rymer held his own until he got close to the 18th hole and rolled in a birdie to win 2-up – a score line that went on to repeat in the final.
