“Okay, so let’s recap where we are in the Toronto search right now. First of all, we didn’t ask for permission. However, they never asked anyone for permission to talk to anyone under contract with another team.

After the change at the GM position, Keith Pelley held a conference call with members of the hockey department, and from talking to a few people after it was over and over the past few days, it’s clear they’re expecting a big change.

Who/Possibly Wants a Front Office Job? Some Maple Leaf Picks

You’ll remember that Brendan Shanahan came in in 2014, watched for a year, then made changes after the ’14-15 season. Now I ask, does Pelly say anything specifically about change there? And it wasn’t so much Ron’s name, it was about the way he spoke. And you know, one of the things he said was, ‘we’re going to use our resources to the best of our ability.’

And they felt that he felt that they didn’t. And that’s why I think a lot of people are expecting more changes than we’ve seen. So we’ll see how that plays out through the end and into the postseason.

Now about, I mean, there were a ton of words thrown around this week. I was as guilty as anyone. Just more difficult things to say.

You know, Doug Armstrong’s name, and I talked about Doug Armstrong. It never seems like the time is right for Doug Armstrong’s Blues and Maple Leaves. So you know, anything can change, and I reserve the right to be wrong now and then, right now and later. But it doesn’t seem like the timing is right for Doug Armstrong and the Maple Leafs.

But another name that I think will be part of Toronto’s search, and that has been discussed this week, is Sunny Mehta, the assistant general manager, one of the assistant general managers of the Florida Panthers. I think he will have an impact.”

MacLean: “You said on the podcast with Kyle, Brandan Shanahan, because, believe it or not, there was a sense of backwardness. Because when Shanahan was sweeping the house, he had to enter the new era with AI and data that Keith Pelley was talking about.”

Friedman: “One of the people I talked to said, ‘Do you think there’s a chance he could come back?’ And I don’t think that will happen.”
