Oilers Prospect Lewandowski Makes Big Remarkable In WHL Playoff Upset – Hockey Writers – Edmonton Oilers

One day, David Lewandowski may give Edmonton hockey fans a lot to be happy about. On Monday (April 6), however, the Saskatoon Blades forward broke their hearts.

Edmonton Oilers prospect Lewandowski had a goal and an assist on the game-winner in overtime to help Saskatoon defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 in Game 7 of the Western Hockey League (WHL) Playoffs first round at Rogers Place.

On the Blades’ power play in sudden death, Lewandowski fired a shot from where teammate Rowan Calvert deflected past Edmonton goaltender Parker Snell, advancing Saskatoon to the second round of the playoffs. The Blades will face the Prince Albert Raiders in a best-of-seven series starting on Friday (April 10).

Saskatoon’s win was a shocking upset, as the Blades finished 20 points behind Edmonton for the 2025-26 WHL title. But if there was any consolation for Edmonton fans to find in the loss, it was in the performance of Lewandowski.

Lewandowski Scored 8 Points vs Oil Kings

The Oilers Drafted Lewandowski in Round 4 Last Year

The Oilers selected Lewandowski in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, with the 117th pick.th choose to draft a left-handed batsman from Dusseldorf, Germany.

It was a surprise that Edmonton was able to select Lewandowski at the expiration of the draft: He was widely touted as a third-round pick, ranked anywhere from 69.th at 86th with the best sources.

With that in mind, some felt that Lewandowski could end up being one of the steals of the 2025 NHL Draft. Now, less than a year later, there is plenty of evidence that the Oilers acted like spoilers in Round 4 last June.

Lewandowski Had A Great Regular Season With The Blades

Lewandowski had a breakout season with Saskatoon in 2025-26, recording 17 goals and 48 assists while averaging a team-best 1.17 points per game, after tallying 15 goals and 24 assists while averaging 0.75 points per game in 2024-25.

The Blades forward was a model of consistency during the regular season, never going more than three games in a row without a point, while authoring four separate streaks of at least five straight games with at least one point.

Lewandowski has been held scoreless just three times in 26 games since Jan. 14 to March 18, improving his game after returning to the 2026 World Junior Championship in Minnesota. He was one of Germany’s best players at the World Juniors, tied for third place in the group with four points.

Lewandowski Could Have Future With Oilers

The Oilers already have a few German players on their roster, with forwards Leon Draisaitl and Josh Samanski. Samanski, 24, just made his NHL debut this season, while Draisaitl has long been established as one of the top centers in hockey.

Lewandowski, who will definitely return to the WHL next season, still has a ways to go before he can join them. But if the 19-year-old continues to develop at his current rate, he could be in the NHL sooner than usual for a fourth-round draft pick. And with Draisaitl signed through the 2032-33 season, there could be at least a few more seasons of the German connection in Edmonton.
