Coventry are now looking to make their first Premier League move to sign the South American striker
Coventry City have been focused on recruiting since gaining promotion to the Premier League, with Botafogo’s Matheus Martins emerging as one of their first targets.
Coventry target the South American attacker
Sunderland and Leeds United have put plans to survive in the Premier League for the first time. Now it’s up to Coventry to follow suit – starting with a few key additions.
To that end, names like Abdul Fatawu are already threatening to steal the headlines. The Leicester City winger is unlikely to stay at the club following their relegation from League One and is on Coventry’s radar as a result.

Both Coventry and Ipswich need Premier League experience next season.
It seems that strengthening the attack will be a priority for the newly promoted club. According to Brazil’s Globo Esporte, Coventry are now eyeing a move to sign Martins from Botafogo – which could see him make his Premier League debut this summer.
Botafogo are reportedly willing to sell the winger for just £7m when the summer transfer window opens – allowing Coventry to come in at a lower price.
It is worth noting that they are not the only interesting side, however. Alongside Frank Lampard’s side, both Feyenoord and Real Betis also have Martins on their radar.
It’s easy to see why interest is starting to grow, too. Martins has been involved in six goals for Brazil this season and is only 22 years old.
His ability to play on both wings and as a striker means Coventry will be investing in a versatile talent, who is still full of potential. He won’t steal the headlines right away, but the South American’s recruitment often pays off in the Premier League.
“The best” Martins can do is play at Coventry
This wouldn’t be Martins’ debut in English football, either. At one point, he was a Watford player, before returning to Brazil to play for Botafogo. It was during his time at Watford that he received praise from Antonio Mango, with the U23 scout even describing him as “good”.
Since then, he has been kicking and has managed to get a chance to return to English football and make his mark in the Premier League for the first time.
It is a good sign that Coventry are opening the radar for such players. While the Sky Blues must consider players who can make an immediate impact, ignoring future stars would be a mistake.
It’s the same way Sunderland went last summer. They received experience from Ganit Xhaka, but they also got gems from Noah Sadiki and have reaped the rewards ever since.
