Liverpool tipped to replace ‘perfect’ Arne Slot to rebuild Reds despite Man City ties

Liverpool have been tipped to replace the ‘perfect’ Arne Slot who would rebuild the Reds, despite his close relationship with Premier League rivals Man City.

Calls for the sack of Arne Slot are growing after PSG cruised past Liverpool

Slot’s second season at Liverpool has gone from bad to worse.

Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat at the Parc des Princes extended what has been a bitter campaign, a run that includes 10 defeats in the Premier League, the most a team has suffered in a single season since 2015/16.

Slot scored a brave start with three goals back against PSG, a technique Liverpool had not used under his management before this season, while Mohamed Salah was left on the bench as an unused substitute for the rest of the season.

Désiré Doué broke the deadlock with a deflected effort inside the first quarter of an hour before Kvaratskhelia added a second to give the French champions the chance they deserved.

Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target at any point during the 90 minutes, with fans now increasingly talking about sacking Slot amid repeated links to Xabi Alonso.

Arne Slot is in the hot seat.

Slot himself admitted the level of defeat afterwards.

He said the game was “about survival” towards the end and defended the decision to leave Salah unused, saying it made no sense to introduce an attacking player when his side could barely escape their half.

PSG’s result came just days after Liverpool were thrashed 4-0 by City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, a game which prompted captain Virgil van Dijk to publicly admit his team-mates had “gone away” – a bitter admission that has continued all week.

Some reports now suggest that FSG have already submitted their end-of-season review of the Slot position.

The second leg against PSG at Anfield takes place next Tuesday, with Liverpool needing to score at least twice to have a realistic chance of progressing.

Into this climate comes a new name added to the growing list of publicly floated alternatives.

Liverpool have told Enzo Maresca that he is “perfect” to lead the rebuilding of Anfield

Former Inter Milan and Italy World Cup winner Marco Materazzi has now urged Liverpool to look to Enzo Maresca as the man to bring stability and clear direction to Anfield.

Maresca-Chelsea

Speaking to Hajper, via The Metro, Materazzi was exploring where Maresca might end up after his move from Chelsea in January.

The Italian left Stamford Bridge following a reported disagreement with the club’s management despite winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup during his time there.

Materazzi ruled out a number of options for Maresca before he arrived at Liverpool as his preferred destination, although Maresca has been linked with City as a former assistant to Pep Guardiola.

It is also worth noting that the Sky Blues were eyeing their former employee to replace Pep if he leaves this summer, but the Merseysiders have been urged to get in there first.

“I think Liverpool will be a good fit for Enzo Maresca,” said Materazzi.

“He is the perfect coach to lead a rebuilding Liverpool to create a new vision for the club.”

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Maresca is still the frontrunner to take Guardiola to City if the Spaniard leaves, ruling him out of any talks with Liverpool.

A potential replacement for the slot remains Alonso, who is currently without a team following his exit from Real Madrid earlier this season and has been tipped by many sources to return to Anfield.

Whether the Slot survives beyond the summer depends largely on what happens over the next two months.

A Champions League exit at the hands of PSG, combined with a failure to secure a top three finish in the Premier League, could make his position very difficult to defend no matter who FSG would like to replace him with.
