INEOS is sending Manchester United officials to see the £43m stadium in person

Manchester United’s pursuit of a midfielder has taken a turn for the worse after INEOS sent Old Trafford officials to do a personal check on AZ Alkmaar star Kees Smit.

Man Utd are planning at least two midfielders

It’s no secret that the Red Devils are looking to rebuild their midfield this summer. 12 months after their surprise attack, INEOS have shifted their focus to diversifying their transfer prowess in the middle of the park with Fabrizio Romano revealing they will sign two new midfielders.

Of course, at that time, the two biggest names that appeared on Man United’s radar were Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali. Man United have not been afraid to buy locally in the past 12 months, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha from Brentford and Wolves, and they could do so again to expand their squad.

Both would be great additions this summer. Anderson, since relegated Nottingham Forest, has been one of Europe’s most impressive midfielders off the ball – recovering better than any other player.

Tonali, on the other hand, is impressive in his own right and is already one of Man United’s best players ahead of the summer. But there is still one problem. Man United are not the only club interested in the pair.

United need to strengthen their midfield this summer.

Competition from Arsenal and Manchester City could still force the Red Devils to turn to another option, which is why they have scouts watching Smit.

Man Utd made personal checks on Smit

As reported by Caught Offside, INEOS sent Man United officials to personally check on Smit after completing their assessment.

The 20-year-old is the most sought-after player in the Premier League, with Newcastle United, Liverpool and Chelsea all interested in his signature, and would cost up to €50m (£43m).

It should come as no surprise that the Dutchman has the world at his feet, either. He has been excellent for AZ Alkmaar this season, recording 12 goal involvements and drawing comparisons with Premier League stars Kevin De Bruyne.

As impressive as both Tonali and Anderson are, Smit is a man who is ready to break into the Premier League while still giving Man United a star of the future. He wouldn’t steal the same headlines, but he would certainly be a brilliant acquisition.

Man Utd aim for “more” UCL qualification, Holland says

By the time Man United return to action on Monday, Artemis II will have been to the moon and back. It felt like an eternity to those at Old Trafford, but the visit of rivals Leeds United looms and it’s not the moonshiners who are aiming for the stars.

Steven Holland, Michael Carrick’s assistant, revealed earlier this week that Man United are targeting more than just Champions League football these days, telling the media: “We were talking a lot with the players about winning our games, rather than thinking too much about what is happening below.

Man Utd’s stadium solution may be a little closer to home.

“But given the context, finishing in the Champions League places would be a good situation for us, but I think we always have to look for more than that.”
