Mike Babcock Emerges as Top Representative in Oilers Coaching Vacancy – Hockey Writers – Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers coaching search has taken a surprising turn.

According to multiple reports, the organization is considering Mike Babcock as its next coach. TSN insiders Darren Dreger and Ryan Rishaug both reported on developments regarding the situation, and additional reports indicate that Oilers owner Daryl Katz has spoken with Babcock and members of Edmonton’s leadership team.

Although the decision has not been finalized, this is no longer just speculation. The Oilers are exploring the possibility.

NHLPA consulting shows that the Oilers are doing well

One of the biggest hurdles surrounding Babcock’s potential hiring stems from a dispute that ended his tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets before the 2023-24 season.

Babcock resigned after allegations surfaced that he inappropriately asked players to show him pictures of themselves on their phones. The incident caused a backlash throughout the hockey world and led to the NHL Players’ Association becoming more involved.

Because of that history, Dreger reported that Edmonton has spoken with the NHLPA to determine if there would be any objections if the club moves forward with hiring Babcock. For now, the NHLPA has declined public comment, and reports indicate that the NHL itself could conduct a review if necessary.

The Oilers clearly understand that this is no ordinary coaching hire. Any move involving Babcock should be handled carefully and transparently.

Babcock Has Already Met Daryl Katz

Reports indicate that Babcock spoke directly with owner Daryl Katz, who holds the final authority on this decision. However, this is not believed to be a case where ownership alone will dictate the outcome. Edmonton’s key players have a lot of influence in the organization, and according to reports, the leadership group has met or spoken with Babcock.

Whatever was discussed seems to have calmed the anxiety inside. Rishaug reported that the leadership team is firmly behind the organization exploring this approach and that the urgency of finally capturing the Stanley Cup outweighs the negative publicity that may accompany the recruitment.

That development may be the most important part of the story. If Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the veteran leaders had taken a step back, it’s hard to imagine the process progressing this far.

Benefits of Hiring Mike Babcock

From a hockey perspective, there are several reasons why the Oilers would consider bringing Babcock behind the bench. First and foremost is his heroic pedigree. Babcock won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008 and has enjoyed success at all levels, including two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada. There are very few coaches out there who have that kind of experience.

Another selling point is the structure and accountability he is known for demanding. Edmonton often relies heavily on its offensive talent to overcome mistakes, but Babcock’s systems have traditionally emphasized defensive responsibility and consistency. Those qualities can help put together a roster that has struggled to play the perfect game.

Babcock also spent much of his career coaching star players. From Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg in Detroit to Sidney Crosby and many of the stars of Team Canada, he has experience managing top talent and the expectations that come with fighting for championships. His continuity alone will bring immediate credibility to the Oilers bench and send a message that the organization is fully committed to winning now.

Risks of Employment

At the same time, hiring Babcock would come with significant risks. Of greater concern is the breakdown in social relations that may inevitably follow. His departure to Columbus in 2023 remains fresh in the minds of many around the league, and the Oilers will face immediate scrutiny from fans, the media and the wider hockey community.

There are also questions about the players’ relationships. Many former players have publicly criticized Babcock’s coaching methods over the years, and there is uncertainty as to whether his demanding style is as applicable in today’s NHL as it was earlier in his career. Today’s players often respond differently than previous generations, making communication and trust more important than ever.

Perhaps of greatest concern is the potential for disruptions. A team with Stanley Cup aspirations needs complete focus, and any controversy surrounding the head coach could quickly become an everyday affair. Because of Babcock’s history, there will likely be no margin for error. If the Oilers can’t get out of the gate, criticism of the recruiting process would quickly escalate, putting more pressure on a team that is already working toward championship expectations.

Edmonton Should Get This Right

The Oilers are entering what could be the most important stretch in franchise history. As McDavid’s future continues to be one of the biggest stories in hockey, Edmonton can’t afford to make a wrong decision on its next coach. The pressure to make money in a team’s Stanley Cup window has never been greater.

If the organization ultimately decides to hire Babcock, it won’t just be based on his impressive resume and past accomplishments. The Oilers must be absolutely certain that their key players and leadership team truly support this move and believe that he is the right person to lead them forward.

More importantly, Edmonton needs to make sure that Babcock has learned from the events that led to his departure to Columbus in 2023 and that he can successfully adapt to today’s NHL environment. Building a healthy, productive culture within the locker room should always be a priority, especially for a team with championship aspirations.

Above all else, the Oilers have to make sure the focus is on winning hockey games instead of dealing with unnecessary controversy. Before any contract is signed, the organization should have clear answers to those questions. With so much at stake, this is a decision they cannot afford.

Current holding pattern

As things stand, the interest is real, but the obstacles remain.

The Oilers have done a lot of homework by talking to the NHLPA, managing ownership and consulting with their leadership team. Internally, there is no apparent rejection of the most important players.

However, approval from within the dressing room does not automatically guarantee approval from the rest of the hockey world. This is the most unique coaching search Edmonton has ever held.

Babcock’s resume makes him an interesting candidate. His history makes him controversial. Now the Oilers must decide if their pursuit of the Stanley Cup is worth the risk that comes with bringing one of hockey’s most divisive figures behind the NHL bench.
