Tigers Claim James Outman Without Twins

The Tigers announced Thursday that they wanted an outfielder James Outman without compromising on the Twins. Detroit’s 40-man roster was full, but they created space by switching infielders/outfielders. Javier Baez from 10-day IL to 60-day IL. The Tigers will need to create a viable outfield for Outman before tomorrow’s game, as they are out of the minor league cap.

Outman, 29, gives the Tigers another option in the middle with both Báez and Places to stay in Parker Meadows on the injured list. Those pairs have been on the shelf since April. Detroit was used Matt Vierling again Wenceel Pérez in center field over the past six weeks, though both are better suited for infield or cornerback duties. Outman, with above-average speed and arm strength, gives manager AJ Hinch a more reliable defensive option.

While Outman may be a good outfielder, however, his bat has often dwarfed any value he adds with his glove or his legs. He impressed as a rookie with the Dodgers in 2023, hitting .248/.353/.437 despite a 32% slugging rate. His communication issues have worsened since then, relegating Outman to a backup role for the most part.

Since 2024, Outman has played in 374 major league games but has a .144/.235/.284 slash. He walked at a respectable 8.8% clip, but his 39.3% strikeout rate is far and away the worst among the 444 players who have totaled 300 plate appearances or more in that span. Jose Siri second-worst, sitting two percent down. No other hitter is within four percent of Outman’s batting average.

The Twins acquired Outman from the Dodgers at last year’s deadline in a trade that sent a talented but often injured prospect. Brock Stewart to Los Angeles. It was a headache even then. Minnesota’s roster was deep with left-handed pitching options (Trevor Larnach, Matt Wallner, Is Clemens, Alan Roden), and two top Twins prospects — Walker Jenkins again Emmanuel Rodriguez – both are outfielders who might already be playing this season if it weren’t for injuries. Add that Outman was going out of business in 2026, and the equation got curious.

Perhaps the Twins felt they could mitigate Outman’s swing and miss problems, but the opposite happened. This year’s 41.4% strikeout rate is the highest in baseball of any of the 428 players with even 40 plate appearances this season. Outman has four steals but has also been caught twice. His defense on the field has been solid, but Minnesota still selected him for assignment a few days ago.

If nothing else, Outman gives the Tigers a late-game option when they need a small rusher or defensive upgrade in the outfield. Given his penchant for strikeouts and his offensive output as a rookie coming out of ’23, it will be difficult for him to stay in the lineup for the rest of the season, barring a major change.

The Tigers hope that Meadows – who suffered a concussion and a broken arm in a collision in April with a teammate. Riley Greene – will be back this summer. Báez’s return seems less certain. Hinch said late last month that the sprained ankle was not healing as expected, and Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reported earlier this month that Báez was being shut down completely due to continued discomfort. The Tigers will always look for outside help. If they continue their recent hot streak – today’s victory makes it seven wins from their last nine games, during which Tarik Skubal again Casey Mize are set to return – then bringing in some more center field help could be a focal point at the trade deadline.
