Man Utd are ready to bid for Cristian Romero after Enzo Fernandez’s appeal to Chelsea

Man United are ready to make a bid for Argentina star Enzo Fernandez who is believed to be wanted by Chelsea, according to reports.

United’s summer rebuild shows no signs of slowing down, with the club continuing to pursue a number of targets despite already strengthening Michael Carrick’s squad.

The Red Devils have been among the busiest teams in the market and it is still believed that more additions will arrive before the transfer window closes.

Following the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, attention has already turned to what positions United may look at next.

Midfield remains one area under scrutiny.

While Ederson’s arrival has given Carrick another powerful option in midfield, reports in recent weeks have suggested United are still looking at adding depth and competition in midfield.

talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs recently reported that West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are the real ones to watch, despite the former set to cost around £85m as things stand (Fabrizio Romano).

Club officials are keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of previous windows and are placing more emphasis on targeted recruitment.

The strengthening of the defense has been discussed internally.

Although Carrick has acquired a number of experienced centre-backs, injuries and poor performance have revealed weaknesses at various points last season.

Manchester United have made a move to sign top talent ahead of the summer window.

So strengthening the heart of the defense has remained part of the conversation as United continue to scout the market.

That focus may be clear now.

Man Utd are preparing an offer for Tottenham player Cristian Romero

According to Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul, Man United are interested in Tottenham defender Cristian Romero and are preparing an offer in an attempt to bring the World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

Tottenham's Cristian Romero was sent off

The update is important.

Romero has long been regarded as one of the most aggressive defenders in the Premier League, and has been called “underrated” by pundits such as football commentator Jacob Horsfall.

His combination of physicality, leadership and experience at the highest level has made him one of Tottenham’s most important players in recent years.

It’s easy to see why United would be interested.

It has long been rumored that Romero will leave Spurs this summer, and the former Serie A star has lost much of his popularity with Lilywhites fans after the news that he will not be present for the deadline day draw against Everton.

That being said, despite having a questionable disciplinary record, Romero has excellent defensive qualities and could quickly add experience to United’s backline.

However, United are not the only club looking at him.

Chelsea have also been linked with Romero and there appears to be support for such a move within the Stamford Bridge dressing room.

Chelsea insider Simon Phillips recently reported that Fernandez would like the Blues to sign his Argentine teammate.

The pair have a strong understanding at international level and Fernandez is believed to be keen to see Romero join him in west London.

That could make for an interesting battle if Tottenham are open to negotiations.

Enzo Fernandez

From United’s point of view, the arrival of Romero would represent a major statement of intent. Proven Premier League defenders with international pedigree are rare, and the 28-year-old will bring both quality and leadership to Carrick’s project.

The challenge, of course, will be convincing Tottenham to sell.

The Spurs have little reason to part with one of their power players unless they receive a big offer. However, discussions between the two Premier League rivals are rarely straightforward.

At the moment, the situation is still in the early stages.
