Danny Rohl’s stance on signing Leeds striker Joel Piroe from Rangers

Rangers’ summer rebuild is starting to take shape as Danny Rohl and the Ibrox recruitment team step up preparations for what promises to be an important transfer window.

After a frustrating campaign that ended without silverware, the message from within the team was clear.

Change is coming, and it’s a lot.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh has spoken of a “big summer change”, while Rohl has admitted that Rangers need new leadership and strength in the squad.

The Gers have already moved to bolster their attacking options with the arrival of Lawrence Shankland, but reports suggest the Scot may not be the last striker on the door this summer.

A number of names have been linked with Ibrox in recent weeks.

Leeds United striker, Joe Gelhardt, is still a player employed by Rangers, with uncertainty over his future at Elland Road despite being away from the club.

Elsewhere, reports also suggest Rangers have retained an interest in Tottenham youngster Mikey Moore following his successful spell under Rohl, while the club have also been credited with an interest in a number of young talents as part of a wider recruitment strategy.

Better than Graham: Rangers have seen a £4.3m bid accepted to sign the “crazy” star.

The Rangers are one of the teams in the race to sign the best star with Luke Graham reportedly being eyed.

The overall goal seems straightforward.

Rangers are looking for a squad that can challenge Celtic immediately and build a strong foundation for the future. That balancing act is expected to define a large part of their business in the coming months.

Another interesting and familiar name has also resurfaced.

Rohl himself wants Rangers to sign Leeds striker Joel Piroe

According to TEAMtalk transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, Rohl himself believes Leeds striker Joel Piroe would be an excellent addition to his Rangers squad.

The Dutchman has built a reputation as one of the most reliable goalscorers outside the Premier League in recent years.

Whether at Swansea City or Leeds, Piroe has been a prolific scorer in the Championship and has repeatedly shown an ability to find space inside the penalty area – netting 73 goals in 179 second-tier games.

That profile is understandably attractive to the Rangers.

While Shankland has already arrived, Rohl is thought to be keen to add more competition in attacking positions, and TEAMtalk suggest the Gers boss has already earmarked Piroe.

Last season exposed Rangers’ inconsistency in front of goal at key times, and bringing in another proven finisher will help address that issue.

Piroe’s experience may also prove useful.

At 26, the ‘top drawer’ striker will arrive at Ibrox in what many would consider the prime years of his career. Unlike other young players the Rangers have been linked with, he is expected to make an immediate impact rather than develop over time.

Joel-Piroe-1

There are obvious obstacles to overcome, such as Piroe being wanted by Birmingham City, Stoke City and Middlesbrough, and it is also believed that the Teddy Bears are not chasing him at the moment.

Leeds also control the player’s future and Rangers will need to find a package that works financially.

However, the connection that exists between the two clubs through the 49ers’ ownership model could help negotiations if interest develops.

At the moment, no deal is imminent.

But with Rohl reportedly considering Piroe as a fit for his scheme, this is a transfer story Rangers fans will want to keep an eye on as the summer window gathers.
