5 Trade Locations for Brendan Gallagher of the Canadiens – Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

After 14 seasons and more than 900 games in a Canadian uniform, Brendan Gallagher’s time in Montreal is coming to an end. Following an end-of-season press conference where Gallagher made it clear he would be moving on, his agent Gerry Johansson has reportedly been given permission to speak to other teams to facilitate a trade. It’s an exciting time for one of the most beloved players in recent franchise history, but now the hockey world is looking to see where he lands next.
Gallagher has a cap hit of $6.5 million and will enter the final year of his six-year contract next season before hitting unrestricted free agency. That contract makes any trade difficult, but his leadership, intelligence, and winning pedigree are still a real asset to the right team. He also carries a no-movement clause and a six-team no-trade list, giving him control over where he ends up. With that in mind, here are five places that make sense.
The Vancouver Canucks
This one has been building for weeks, and it seems that Gallagher himself is determined to come with the Vancouver Canucks this summer. The connection to Vancouver runs deep. He played his young career with the Vancouver Giants and is still the franchise’s all-time leader in goals and points. The Canucks famously passed on him in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, and this offseason gives them a chance to correct that mistake. Regardless of the emotion, Vancouver has the ability to accept his contract, and the presence of the veteran Gallagher could answer some real questions surrounding the team’s leadership group.
Edmonton Oilers
Gallagher was born in Edmonton, and his physical, forward style is exactly the type of forward the Edmonton Oilers have been missing this season. The Corey Perry comparisons have already been made, and rightly so. The roadblock is financial; taking his full $6.5 million cap hit isn’t something Edmonton can realistically do, but with salary retention and package moves, a balance may emerge.
If the Canadiens trade him, the Oilers should be among the first teams looking for a short-term, incentive-laden deal.
Ottawa Senators
A much-discussed but compelling option, the Ottawa Senators have the cap space to offer Gallagher a real contract, and their new roster could truly benefit from his type of leadership and level of competitiveness. Ottawa is a team trending upward, and they add a player who has built an NHL career into the competition and a character that fits perfectly with what Brady Tkachuk and company are trying to build. Living in the Eastern Conference, near Montreal, would appeal to Gallagher personally.
Carolina Hurricanes
No report has directly linked Gallagher to the Carolina Hurricanes, but the fit is worth mentioning on its merits. The Hurricanes had just finished eliminating the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference finals, and head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s program was built on the defining characteristics of Gallagher’s game: constant exploration, defense, and accountability at all times.
As THW noted this week, the series revealed just how big the gap is between Montreal and a strong rival like Carolina, which speaks to the culture Brind’Amour has built in Raleigh. Gallagher was healthy in the last elimination game against the Hurricanes which was a bitter end but his style of play will translate well in that market. Whether it’s a trade with salary retention or a post-draft signing with a reduced number, it’s a dark horse situation to watch.
The Florida Panthers
It’s a long shot given their solid status, but the Florida Panthers have proven year after year that they find ways to add the right pieces. Gallagher’s career-low 12:21 average ice time this season shows he can be effective in a reduced role, which is exactly what Florida needs from him. He brings Stanley Cup experience by osmosis, having faced Cup contenders deep in multiple playoffs, and his mentality fits a locker room already capable of winning. If the Panthers open up this summer, don’t take out a flyer on Gallagher.
Big Picture
Regardless of what happens next, Gallagher made it clear that he leaves Montreal with nothing but gratitude, calling it a privilege to play in front of the Bell Center crowd for 14 seasons. The question now shifts from feeling to behavior. With Montreal needing to clear cap space and re-sign several restricted free agents, moving Gallagher via trade or buyout is one of the most pressing tasks for general manager Kent Hughes this offseason.
The fit may not be perfect anywhere, but for a player who has built his entire career on proving doubters wrong, finding a new home and making it work is the kind of challenge Gallagher always welcomes. The next chapter is about to begin.
