Report, result and goals as Tricky Trees stun Stadium of Light

Nottingham Forest produced a terrible performance defeating Sunderland 5-0 at the Stadium of Light, bringing a result that could be crucial in their fight for survival in the Premier League.
A first-half performance effectively wrapped up the contest before the break, with Forest scoring four goals in a stunning 20-minute spell that left the home crowd stunned and cheering for the exit long before full-time.
Jungle riots in the first half
Sunderland started brightly enough, opening an early opportunity when Chris Rigg was played in, but his effort was well saved by Matz Sels. That would prove a brief moment of promise on a night that would punish the hosts.
Forest’s opener came in the 17th minute, albeit in fashion. Good corner work caused problems in the Sunderland box, and after Igor Jesus drove the ball behind the post, it crossed Trai Hume and unfortunately went into the net.
A second goal, after half an hour, summed up Sunderland’s struggles. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs tried to play back under pressure, but met Morgan Gibbs-White’s gift. His quick thinking released Chris Wood, who kept his composure to double Forest’s lead.
Forest were playing with confidence and precision, and the third goal quickly followed. Another clever set-piece saw Igor Jesus nod the ball into the path of Gibbs-White, who swept home to cap a fine individual display.
By the 37th minute, the contest was over. Sunderland failed to clear their lines from the free-kick, and when the ball fell to Jesus on the edge of the box, he volleyed it into the net to make it 4-0.
Control and late bloomers
With such a strong lead, Forest understandably took their foot off in the second half. The tempo dropped, and chances became few and far between, although the visitors remained composed and punished themselves defensively.
Sunderland thought they had pulled a goal back midway through the half when Dan Ballard headed home from close range after a cross, but a VAR review ruled it out. The decision went against the athletes because of Sels’ poor performance during construction, extinguishing any faint hopes of a comeback.
Despite scoring more after the break, Sunderland struggled to create clear chances. Their best chance came when Enzo Le Fee unleashed a powerful effort from distance, only for Sels to clear the balance to keep his clean sheet.
Forest, on the other hand, were content to manage the game, make substitutions and conserve energy for the upcoming games. Even though they didn’t register the ball in the second half, their dominance earlier ensured that there was no risk of the result slipping away.
There was still time for one last shot in stoppage time. Taiwo Awoniyi, showing awareness inside the box, opted to square the ball rather than shoot, allowing Elliot Anderson to slide home from close range to make it 5-0.
The result of the statement
The win extends Forest’s unbeaten run and provides a major boost in their battle to avoid relegation.
It wasn’t just the margin of victory, but the manner of doing it, especially in the first half, that will give their fans real faith in the coming weeks.
