Coventry City believe they can sign the £5k-a-week defender ahead of Bayern Munich

Coventry City believe they can win the race for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, despite interest from Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

Coventry are eyeing transfer targets in the summer after signing up

Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, meaning their only aim is to make sure they win the Championship title, and they have a strong chance of doing just that.

If the Sky Blues take all three points at home against Portsmouth on Tuesday night, they will go up as champions, with Frank Lampard’s side ten points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town, who have four games to play.

Football Insider reporter, Pete O’Rourke, made it clear that the board plans to support Lampard through the transfer window, and he did not expect the Englishman to leave.

“I would be surprised if Lampard left Coventry now. He led them back to the Premier League. I believe Coventry will bring Lampard back in the transfer market this summer and give him money to improve the team.

“They will need it if they want to make an impact in the Premier League. Coventry are confident and comfortable that Lampard will want to continue with them in the Premier League and he is still a big part of their project.”

Doug King clearly has big plans for the summer window, with a report from Sports Boom revealing that Coventry now believe they can win the race for Chelsea defender Acheampong, although Bayern Munich remain interested in the 19-year-old.

Acheampong

The youngster, who earns £5k-a-week, is still in the infancy of his career, and is yet to prove himself as a regular for the Blues, who have made 14 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Sky Blues believe he could tempt the Premier League side to agree to a loan move, and he could be a solid addition to Lampard’s back line, with him hailed as “amazing” by journalist Nizaar Kinsella after he struck Liverpool’s Alexander Isak in October.

Statman Dave also praised the young player for the way he played against Nottingham Forest, and Coventry probably needed players who will be at their best if they are to avoid defeat next season.

Frank Lampard plans to raid Chelsea

Acheampong is not the only Chelsea player Coventry have set their sights on, as it has been revealed Lampard are keen on signing fellow youngster Jesse Derry.

There have also been suggestions that Chelsea could re-hire their former boss in the summer, and if a return to Stamford Bridge does happen, the Sky Blues could bring in a Championship boss.
