The Liverpool job is of ‘great interest’ to the former Bayern Munich boss as agents are in contact with him

The former manager of Bayern Munich has reportedly been in contact with Liverpool, and the tactician would very much like to replace Arne Slot.

Liverpool are preparing for the Merseyside derby with Europe at stake

The reigning Premier League champions, beaten 4-0 on aggregate by PSG in the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, are out of the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and watching the title race from afar.

Securing the fifth spot is now the only logical target left on the Slot horizon, and even that has not been resolved.

Slot enters the final weeks of the campaign after admitting the club’s changing situation, pointing to the need to sell players before additions are made this summer (Sky Sports).

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson leave on free transfers at the end of the season, and the latter could be on their way to Spurs if they are not cut, with the former given the chance to move to Saudi.

The Anfield side are at a low point.

The Reds look set to enter a period of transition, and despite Fabrizio Romano confirming that Liverpool have no immediate plans to sack Slot, the pressure on the Dutchman will intensify if they do not finish the season strongly.

Amidst links with former Anfield favorite Xabi Alonso, another potential replacement for Slot has now entered contention.

That name is German manager Julian Nagelsmann.

According to TEAMtalk and reporter Graeme Bailey, his agents contacted Liverpool, making the club aware of his availability and desire to move to England.

Nagelsmann, 38, has the most impressive CV in Europe for a coach of his age.

He improved Hoffenheim, transformed RB Leipzig and won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, before taking charge of the German national team in 2023.

TEAMtalk say that while five clubs, including Liverpool, have approached, none of them insist that management changes are planned at the moment, and most are yet to pursue a move from Nagelsmann’s side.

Liverpool’s angle is the most interesting given the circumstances.

A move to Anfield would be of “great interest” to Nagelsmann if the club decide to make a change after this season’s end-of-season review.

Romano said earlier this week that a full review is being planned which will include summer recruitment and an assessment of Slot’s situation – although Romano is also clear that the Dutchman has felt supported throughout the season and has not been put under pressure from above.

For now, Nagelsmann is focused on the World Cup, preparing Germany for what it hopes will be a run at a fifth world title this summer.

However, England is still a place where the ‘psychological’ manager camp points beyond that.

Whether Liverpool, having carried out their review, decide they want a new man – or whether Slot is given another chance to rebuild – will be one of the summer’s stories at Anfield.
