Newcastle have made a £60m bid to sign Anthony Gordon

Ever since the Saudi PIF took over Newcastle United in 2021, fans have become accustomed to spending heavily in the transfer market.
Last summer alone, the Magpies spent more than £200m on new additions, but due to financial constraints in the Premier League, sales are often required before making any new signings.
Alexander Isak was the player who was sacrificed last summer as he joined Liverpool for a reported £125m – with such a transfer breaking the English transfer record.
However, Anthony Gordon could be the next player sold by Eddie Howe and Co, as rumors swirl about the England international’s long-term future at St James’ Park.
Supporters needn’t worry, however, as officials have already drawn up a shortlist of potential additions to replace the 25-year-old should he leave this summer.
Newcastle are making a £60m bid to sign the star this summer
A few weeks ago, Newcastle were also credited with an interest in signing Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia, after trying to land the youngster last summer.
The 22-year-old has struggled to get past the Santiago Bernabeu this season, as evidenced by his few starts in LaLiga in 2025/26.
As a result, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side are said to have approved a move for the Spaniard this summer, which will no doubt have the Magpies on their guard again.
However, Garcia is not the only attacker currently on Howe’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with Porto star William Gomes another option currently under consideration.
According to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade, the Magpies have already made an offer to sign the 20-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in all competitions.
He also pointed out that although it is not yet clear whether the boy’s request has been accepted, he is a respected player in the Premier League – and other parties are keen on him.
The Portuguese outfit are said to be seeking a fee of around £60m to allow the Brazilian to take the next step in his professional career.
Why Gomes would be the perfect replacement for Gordon at Newcastle
As previously mentioned, Gordon is a player who could leave Newcastle this summer, and the Englishman has been attracting a lot of interest over the past few days.
The 25-year-old’s representatives are already in early talks with German club Bayern Munich over a potential deal – but there is also strong interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have also expressed an interest in his services – which could see the Englishman follow in Isak’s footsteps by moving to Anfield.
It is not clear how much the Magpies would want for Gordon’s signing this summer, but losing the striker could have a huge impact on Howe’s top flight.
The striker currently sits as the top scorer in all competitions this campaign with 17 goals, which highlights how effective he is in the final third of the pitch.
However, Gomes’ departure could see the club take a more favorable position, with the Brazilian attracting attention in the ongoing season with Porto.
His 14-goal tally shows his ability to find the net like Gordon, his understated stats also highlight his quality in attacking areas.

Gomes, called “amazing” by talent scout Antonio Mango, has completed 1.8 effective tackles per 90, while recording 5.5 touches in the opposition box per 90.
The latter of the aforementioned statistics puts him in the top 12% of the best players in the top division in Portugal, behind the fox in the box that Gordon has.
The Brazilian has registered 1.4 shots per 90 goals to go along with a 40% shot on target, both stats placing him in the top 5% of forwards in the league.
Off the ball, the 20-year-old also showed his quality, as he made 1.8 balls per 90, while winning the ball 1.1 times per 90 in the final third.
As well as his attacking stats, such a character in football is typical of Gordon, who is often praised for his tireless effort to win the ball back for the Magpies.
£60m could be yet another big investment from the management this summer, but it could put an attacking door in place.
for many years to come.
Losing Gordon would be painful for fans, but Gomes’ deal would undoubtedly allow fans to forget about the England international.
His overall quality at both ends of the pitch could prove to be a huge asset to Howe’s side, where his arrival could provide the club with top-class talent to aid in their quest for glory.
