Kieran Maguire drops the twist in West Brom’s case involving Leicester and Portsmouth

Kieran Maguire has revealed a potential mistake against West Bromwich Albion in the EFL that could have a major impact on the Championship relegation race.

West Brom have been charged with a breach of turnover and sustainability

A difficult season for West Brom could get even tougher after they were charged with breaching the EFL’s P & S rules with just four games left to play.

If they are to get points deducted at this stage of the campaign, their chances of survival will diminish as happened with Leicester City earlier in the campaign.

As things stand, the Baggies are two points off the dropzone and are hoping to avoid punishment until next season after issuing a statement on the matter.

“West Bromwich Albion acknowledges the media reports relating to the club’s compliance with the EFL’s Profitability & Sustainability (P&S) rules. The club considers that it is in full compliance with the P&S rules.

“The club will continue to work with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit and look forward to resolving this matter. Albion understands the fans’ concerns and thanks the fans for their unwavering support for the club, whose success on the pitch during the final four games of the season remains our absolute priority.

“It would not be right for the club to comment further at this time.”

In addition, according to John Percy of The Telegraph, who first broke the news of the violation, West Brom tried to delay the punishment until next season, but their efforts may ultimately fail.

The charge came after they went over the limit by almost £16m – a record loss of £55m over three years. It would be a huge blow if West Brom were to be punished at this stage, and financial expert Kieran Maguire has launched a new spin on that.

Maguire shared the latest twist in the West Brom case

Speaking to BBC Sport, Maguire had his say on the West Brom issue, revealing a ‘mistake’ that could mean they won’t be able to cash in and have a huge impact on the likes of Portsmouth, Oxford United and Leicester City.

How many points can West Brom be deducted and when is the penalty awarded?

West Brom insists it has fully complied with profit and sustainability rules.

A financial expert said: “I heard through the grapevine – and this wasn’t to do with the team – they think that someone, somewhere must have made a mistake in adding up or taking out the numbers.

“I think it’s worse than a conspiracy. I don’t think there’s been some kind of good strategy by West Bromwich Albion to overspend.”

Kieran Maguire’s decision for West Brom

  • The WBA is no more than £1m over the limit

  • It’s not good for the WBA or other clubs at this stage of the season

  • The situation may still be the manager’s fault

If that is the case and West Brom believe someone has made a mistake, then the coming weeks will be interesting. From pushing above the relegation zone, the Baggies’ championship status could be thrown into greater doubt than ever due to actions away from the pitch.

It would be incredibly shocking if all three clubs relegated from the second tier were handed financial-related penalties when they dropped down to League One.
