Blow for Real Madrid as Liverpool reach “final stages” of contract deal

Liverpool are in the “final stages” of a contract deal for Real Madrid target Ibrahima Konate, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Liverpool players leaving this summer
The Reds are facing another summer of change as Andy Robertson becomes the latest club legend to confirm his decision to leave at the end of the season.
Mohamed Salah announced his departure during the international break, and the defender is now set to follow suit.
The Scotland captain spent nine seasons with the Reds, making 373 appearances and winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

Where does Andy Robertson rank?
The 32-year-old has been limited to 15 starts this season following the arrival of Milos Kerkez, and will leave when his contract expires in the summer.
Speaking on the club’s website, Robertson said: “It’s not easy to leave a club like this Liverpoolit has been a big part of my and my family’s life for the past nine years. But for me, the players move on, some people move on – the thing that hasn’t changed is the team and obviously the fans.
“I’ve been here for nine years. Look, I think it’s well documented, especially over the last year or so, I’ve had opportunities to leave and I didn’t take it because of the difficulty of leaving this club. And I wouldn’t change that for the world.”
With the future of manager Arne Slot in doubt again, the Reds may be in for a busy transfer window and pre-season, but Romano has now brought good news at last.
Konate is getting closer to a contract agreement
Indeed, the journalist revealed on his YouTube channel that Liverpool are in the “final stages” of a new deal for Konate, who has been the subject of interest from Real Madrid.
Although nothing is signed and sealed yet, it sounds like there will be no more Trent Alexander-Arnold situation.
“The deal between Konate and Liverpool is getting closer, it’s almost there. It’s not done, it’s signed, it’s done, and we have to wait until the end before we say it’s done.”
Romano says the length of the contract and salary are still being discussed, but Liverpool are “leading the race” to attract Real Madrid’s interest.
The new contract is likely to make Konate one of the highest paid players at the club, as he is currently incredibly low on Liverpool’s wage list.
“Currently, the club leading the race to acquire Konate’s services from next season is Liverpool.”

Virgil van Dijk will have just one year left on his contract this summer, so a move to tie Konate down to a long-term future looks important.
