How Callaway redesigned its golf ball and why the Chrome Tour X stayed in my bag

There’s something deeply satisfying about the global golf ball industry that doesn’t try to look like a spaceship.
When you walk up to Callaway’s golf ball plant in Chicopee, Massachusetts, you’re not greeted by a hyper-futuristic windshield or floor-to-ceiling LED screens. It’s a solid, sturdy brick building that sits in a quiet New England town. It looks like a place where the real work is done by people who have spent their entire lives developing the business.
The truth is, they have — and like Callaway’s golf tour, this dedicated plant in Chicopee has seen its ups and downs. But since we started, the goal of this plant has always been to develop and grow the economy for the residents of this city. Undoubtedly, evolution is exactly what has happened. Within these low brick walls sits one of the most advanced golf ball production lines in the world.

Having spent a significant chapter of my career within Callaway since 2021, this facility and the people within it hold a very special place in my heart. When I first walked through those doors, part of my clear mandate was to help educate golfers about what Callaway was doing on the golf course. I saw firsthand how much heart, pride and relentless sweat the team pours into every shift. So watching the evolution of this football business over the years is not just an industry lesson for me – it’s a personal one.
When Callaway first took ownership of the Chicopee facility, the work was at a decent level. Within those walls were only 98 workers. The plant was important to the local economy, but Callaway’s place on the premier golf course was still up for grabs. Back around 2012, if you told anyone in the company that football’s revenue could one day clear $200 million, the room would have cheered.
Eventually, the brand reached those financial milestones, but it did so mainly on the huge popularity of lines like SuperSoft and the first generations of Chrome Soft. Golfers eat those. They were comfortable, soft feeling and incredibly forgiving for everyday players. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, that commercial boom was fueled by the appeal of unusual merchandise, not an outstanding, first-rate operating model.
Callaway makes a great ball for the weekend player, but it hasn’t forced the world’s best players to re-examine what’s in their bags.
The history of Callaway football actually creates the Chrome era. Long before Chrome Soft became a household name, Callaway was making serious statements in ball design. In 2000, they shook up the industry with Rule 35, proving that multi-layer hardball could compete at the highest level. A few years later came the field of HEX aerodynamics, removing the traditional hexagonal geometry’s rounded dimples to stabilize flight in heavy winds – innovations that directly paved the way for some iconic big moments, including Phil Mickelson’s stunning 2004 Masters win.
Those products proved that Callaway has the R&D chops, but maintaining grain consistency across millions of production runs while scaling quickly is a whole different animal. Good would never be good enough.
Around 2019, the trajectory changed dramatically. Did industrial critics cause all this? No. Knowing Callaway CEO Chip Brewer as I did, building the best golf ball business in the world was the level he was looking for. He is not a guy who takes half measures. Chip Brewer is a shifty, passive CEO, which was music to my ears for a guy like me. Instead of just moving the tile puzzle, Chip blew it all up. He knew the ball could be even better, so he brought out Mark Leposky and the engineering team to make a big, multi-phased change.
In the gear business, you end up hitting a fork in the road: either you agree to be the most profitable retail option, or you commit to the huge costs and hard work required to increase your productivity.

They didn’t just fix the cover or change the logo. They have invested more than $100 million directly into modernizing Chicopee from top to bottom. Every single square inch of the plant has been rebuilt – an extensive transformation that affects everything from modern raw material mixers and high-precision digital printing to highly barometrically controlled test chambers.
While the core internal updates lay the groundwork, focusing only on the core misses the real story of what happened in Chicopee. The real leap forward – the innovation that took this platform from the world level to the extreme – happened without aerodynamic performance.
In the construction of a high-velocity golf ball, the green energy from the face is completely wasted when the ball hits the wind. This is where the Seamless Tour Aero redefined everything. For years, traditional golf ball production relied on black patterns that left a visible seam where the mold halves met, creating subtle differences in lift and drag depending on how the ball landed on the tee or into the wind. Callaway’s team beat conventional geometries to engineer a complex, seamless breathable surface that completely eliminates seam position variation.
Whether you’re hit with a 20-mph gust or a treacherous crosswind, the surface geometries and small dimple depth are held to tight tolerances, keeping drag to a minimum and delivering a sharp, unshakeable flight window. All the factory specs in the world mean nothing if top players don’t trust the ball when a trophy is on the line. Tour pros are overly protective of their setup, and the ball is the most critical item in the bag because it is involved in every single shot.
When Jon Rahm explored moving to Callaway, his first position was simple: let me explore the golf ball first. He wanted to separate those variables before talking about clubs. Rahm stood on the range, hitting ball after ball in different wind conditions, watching how he started, pierced the air with the Tour Aero dimples and reacted around the green. The performance and predictability of that aerodynamic plane was the exact reason he decided to change his entire setup.
The story with Xander Schauffele was straightforward. Xander went into his first screening test making it clear that if the ball doesn’t work quickly, he’s done – famously saying he’ll know within three swings. He bounded the ball, hit a few shots in the hot breeze, and watched it take its line well. He turned back to his team and calmly admitted that they had a good problem on their hands because he loved flying.
When you see the big championship trophies raised by Rahm at Augusta or Schauffele at the PGA Championship and The Open, those balls weren’t born in some secret lab on Mars. They were mixed, shaped and assembled by the men and women of Chicopee.
In 2024, Callaway took everything they learned from the plant overhaul and did a complete blank canvas reset on their tour lineup, moving from the previous Chrome Soft X frame to introducing the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X.
The goal with the Chrome Tour X was clear: create a pure performance golf ball for players who need high speed, true greenside control and perfect flight management. They focused on reducing driver drag in the Seamless Tour Aero to keep the ball in the air while maintaining that cool, responsive touch on and around fast greens.
When the team at Callaway presented me with the latest build of the Chrome Tour X late last fall, I was blown away. With modern measurement, we tend to hunt for small fractions of a percent. Big jumps late in the game are rare.
Then I pulled it out to shoot.
Immediately on the monitor, I saw a 3 mph jump in ball speed from the driver. With my swing, getting 3 more miles per hour without changing my tempo or control sacrifice is huge. But what won me the most was the way it behaved in the air. Thanks to that aerodynamic package, it’s launched with a low, inward-looking driver’s window that holds its line straight in gusts, while still giving me aggressive, sticky feedback on my goals.
In regards to the way I play golf – where controlling my launch in the air and relying entirely on short game testing is everything – this ball solved a big problem for me. It gave me real distance and flight control without forcing me to stop touching the green.
It’s easy to get lost in the marketing noise of the golf industry. Every season, everyone promises a longer distance and a better feeling. But real progress in engineering is nothing short of amazing. It’s hard, it’s a grind. Millions of dollars have been invested in production tools, tight controls and endless test loops in a range of players who want perfection.
Callaway’s journey from Rule 35 and HEX to a dominant, tour-dominating power was built step by step inside a brick factory in Massachusetts.
Standing in Chicopee and watching the Chrome Tour X balls roll off the line today, knowing how far this team has come and how much care goes into every layer, fills me with pride for their builders and true excitement that they are taking this business next. For my money and my game, the Chrome Tour X isn’t just a ball on paper — a ball that’s earned its place in my bag through pure performance.
