Chelsea are looking to sign the former Tottenham star who was wanted by Messi at Barcelona
Chelsea’s search for an experienced third-placed goalkeeper has led to them reaching out to one of the Premier League’s most popular veteran marksmen.
Fraser Forster has enjoyed an impressive career spanning nearly two decades, arriving at Newcastle before becoming a Celtic icon during two successful spells in Glasgow.
His best night arguably came in the Champions League against Barcelona in 2012, when he produced a series of stunning saves to help Celtic secure a famous 2-1 victory over the Spanish giants.
His display was so memorable that Lionel Messi later revealed that Barcelona had discussed signing him after Victor Valdés announced his departure, admitting that Forster’s performance was among the greatest goalkeepers he had ever seen.
Forster later enjoyed seven seasons with Southampton before joining Tottenham in 2022, where he became a loyal supporter and knowledgeable voice within the dressing room.
Although opportunities were limited behind their first choice goalkeeper, he made key appearances in domestic and European competitions, helping Spurs to lift the Europa League before leaving at the end of his contract.
Earlier this year, Bournemouth signed the former England international on a short-term deal before rewarding his influence at the club with a one-year extension last month.
Although he did not feature regularly, the Cherries appreciate both his intelligence and the guidance he gives to their young goalkeepers.
The Blues are looking for an experienced, home-grown goalkeeper who can cover the third spot and help develop the club’s younger goalkeepers.

Any movement can be difficult because of one important factor.
Forster only signed a new one-year contract with Bournemouth last month, meaning Chelsea will need to reach an agreement with the Cherries rather than simply signing him as a free agent.
Bournemouth also consider him an important figure behind the scenes, even if his main contribution comes through experience rather than regular appearances.
From Chelsea’s point of view, however, the concept is straightforward.
