Rangers could sign a more impactful player than Raskin for £5m

Glasgow Rangers have yet to sell a first-team star since the summer transfer window opened last month.

Jack Butland made a £3m move to Premier League side Hull City to return south, while Ivor Pandur came the other way to take £6m to sign him.

However, they never sold anyone for significant money. That could change, however, as central midfielder Nicolas Raskin is attracting more attention.

Manchester United and Real Betis are just two of the many clubs likely to sign the Belgian before the end of the window.

Why the Rangers need to cash in on Nicolas Raskin

Losing the 25-year-old would be a blow for Derek McInnes after the midfield talent scored six goals and provided seven assists in 33 Scottish Premiership games in the 2025/26 campaign.

It would be a good time for the Ibrox giants to cash in on the Belgian, however, as his current contract with the club expires in the summer of 2028.

That means he will only have one year left on his contract if they don’t sell him this year and try to keep him for another season, reducing his value as interested parties may decide to waive it and wait for a free transfer.

Raskin, who has played just over 100 games in the past two seasons, may want to try out in one of Europe’s big leagues as he enters the prime of his 25-year-old career.

Convincing him to sign a contract extension, therefore, could be a tall order for the Gers, which is why cashing in on him this summer, while his value is high, would be a smart move for the club.

Another reason why the 49ers should be willing to green light Raskin’s exit is that they are already looking for someone to fill a void that can provide more to the team in the middle of the park.

TEAMtalk reports that Glasgow Rangers are in ongoing talks with Tromso over a deal to sign Norwegian talent Jens Hjerto-Dahl in the summer transfer window.

The outlet say the Light Blues have already agreed personal terms with the 20-year-old midfielder, who is set to move to Ibrox ahead of next season.

It added that it would take around £5m to land the Norway U21 international, and that the sale of Raskin for £17m or more, with Villarreal interested, could help fund the deal.

Hjerto-Dahl has scored seven goals in 14 league appearances in Tromso’s 2026 Eliteserien campaign, scoring a fine away goal in their latest game on Saturday.

The £5m-rated star averages 0.64 goals per game from midfield for the Norwegian club, showing he is making a consistent impact at the other end of the pitch.

Raskin, who won the club’s player of the year award for the 2024/25 campaign, averaged 0.39 goals per game last season in the Premiership, and 0.42 in the 2024/25 campaign with four goals and ten assists in 33 games.

These figures suggest that Hjerto-Dahl has the potential to have a greater impact at the other end of the pitch than Raskin, as he provides a greater and more consistent threat to the opposition’s goal.

Therefore, replacing the Belgian with this transfer target could improve McInnes’ attacking potential and give the team a sharp attacking arsenal to go and blow away teams in the Premiership next term.

If he can adapt to the physicality and pressure of the Premiership, Hjerto-Dahl could be the team’s best player as a goal-scoring midfielder who could win the Gers plenty of points with his contributions in the final third.
