Why Spurs want to sign £60m Premier League star with ‘a bit of Yamal’

The story is over for England’s rising star Djed Spence, but there will be one Tottenham Hotspur representative lifting the World Cup this summer, as Cristian Romero’s Argentina take on Pedro Porro’s Spain on Sunday.

By all accounts, Romero won’t be a Spurs player for long amid widespread talk of an exit, with the captain clearly out of favor following a string of on- and off-field antics last season.

In Porro’s case, the 26-year-old is looking to stay after signing a new deal earlier this summer, with the former Sporting CP star enjoying a good run so far with La Roja.

It was a disappointing 2025/26 all told, but the lack of consistency on the right was a real problem with the succession of managers. Indeed, Porro could do with a Lamine Yamal-esque figure in front of him back in N17.

What Porro said about his connection with Yamal

Porro, like almost everyone back in north London, suffered a terrible last quarter, found wanting both offensively and defensively, after scoring just three goals at right-back, while making five mistakes that led to the firing.

At his best, the attacking full-back is always such a threat, however, something he has shown amid a string of fine performances for his country, almost looking like a right-back in this competition.

He has started five games so far, keeping three clean sheets, keeping no mistakes and scoring two goals, the last of which came against France in the last four.

The Spanish team’s control and composure probably helps, but so does Porro’s blossoming relationship with Yamal below right, after talking about how the two started a relationship a few weeks ago.

With the likes of Randal Kolo Muani simply not cutting it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, Porro need a consistent right-back to be consistent next season.

Hopefully, Roberto De Zerbi and co do something about that.

Why the Spurs would be ready to sign their answer to Yamal

Let’s face it, players like Yamal just don’t grow on trees, as this has been a World Cup where attacking talents, whether Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele or Jude Bellingham, have stood out.

Considering that only Richarlison reached double figures in goals and assists in the Premier League last term, Spurs have nowhere near that kind of quality, or rather, no one has been consistently fit to show it.

Well, that may be why – according to a respected Spurs insider – ENIC are now set to promote a move for Manchester City’s Savinho, with the club looking to ‘accelerate’ their interest.

The 22-year-old – who could be worth £60m – is believed to have been ‘selected’, despite enduring a difficult season at the Etihad.

Lying behind the likes of Rayan Cherki, Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo, the Brazilian was the forgotten man under Pep Guardiola, scoring and assisting just two goals in the league.

However, there was much to be encouraged about in Savinho’s first season in England, as he scored one and added eight assists, while creating 11 ‘big chances’.

The young left-footed striker also ranked eighth in the division in terms of tackles completed, supporting why pundit Paul Merson believes he has “got a bit of Yamal” in his game.

Last year, Savinho stood out in LaLiga during Yamal’s off year, leading the way in the category of successful dribbles, ahead of the young Spaniard fifth, while scoring 19 goals and assists for the Girona team.

It’s also interesting, according to Scout Lab, the player most similar in terms of stats and style to the South American in that 2023/24 season was actually Yamal, and he shows that similarity.

Of course, Savinho hasn’t started as expected amid the tournament’s riches in Manchester, but a restart in north London could see him explode under De Zerbi’s watch.

Of course, Porro wouldn’t be the only one who could benefit from ENIC making a deal this summer.
