The R&A has today issued a new code of conduct which it expects its fans to follow when they attend the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next week.
The ‘Open Commitment’ is built on five simple principles and encourages everyone present to play their part in ‘protecting the traditions that make The Open one of the world’s greatest sporting events’.
The principles set are: 1) Respect the Players. 2) Respect Links. 3) Respect each other. 4) Be careful. 5) Enjoy Responsibly (see details below).
The statement said the guide aims to ‘ensure that players, spectators, volunteers, officials, staff and the local community can enjoy a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience’.
The transaction code will be communicated to fans before and during the Tournament through digital channels, ticket communications and on-site signage.
Viewers are warned that serious or repeated breaches of The Open Commitment may result in removal from Royal Birkdale without refund.
Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “The spirit of The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and is one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on shared respect for the players, the course, other fans and the culture of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.
“The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes the Open so special, it’s about preserving its longstanding traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure that the Open remains a welcoming, respectful and memorable experience for all.”
The code of conduct is intended to avoid a repeat of some of the scenes seen at Royal Liverpool in 2023 when Brian Harman, who continued to lift the Claret Jug, was the subject of repeated attempts to send him off with taunts, while the rest of the gallery was clearly drunk.
Similar behavior was more visible in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York, where European players, even their family members, were verbally abused, while last month the US Open champion Wyndham Clark was on the verge of barracking and jeered by American fans.
What are the requirements for ‘Open Commitment’
- Respect the Players
Stay quiet and still while the players prepare and play their shots. Do not shout at players inappropriately during play or ask for autographs outside designated areas. Celebrate fair play and sportsmanship. Follow the direction of event staff, marshals and security personnel at all times. Mobile devices should be silent. Photography for personal use is acceptable but must be quiet and not interrupt play or disturb other fans. Audio recording, video recording or light photography of the performance is not permitted. - Respect Links
Help us protect the historical links by following all the signs, barriers and wire ropes to protect the greenery, the buildings and all the playgrounds. Respect other closed areas to protect local wildlife and the environment. Support sustainability initiatives by reducing waste, separating waste in the proper waste management area, and using a reusable water bottle. - Respect each other
Show respect and consideration for those around you at all times. All fans should help create a welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment.
The IR&A has a zero tolerance policy for any form of intimidating behavior directed at players, officials, staff, volunteers or spectators – including but not limited to; foul language, sexual harassment, or any harassment that discriminates on the basis of sex, age, race, disability, gender, or religion.
Flags, clothing or displays of support must be consistent with the Open and the players, and must not obstruct viewing, interfere with play or adversely affect the experience of others. Be considerate of local people and communities on your way to and from The Open. - Be careful
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in areas where balls may be moving at high speeds. If you hear the ‘Ahead’ warning call or see players, caddies or marshals moving, please remain alert and take immediate action to protect yourself and others nearby. Prohibited items and unauthorized vehicles are not permitted on site to help ensure a safe Competition environment. - Enjoy Responsibly
Alcohol must be enjoyed responsibly and respectfully, while it may not be brought outside the premises and is not allowed within the main arenas.
