Commesso Gets Chance to Make Blackhawks

Commesso has been with the Rockford IceHogs for the past three seasons, owning a .906 SV% (Save Percentage) and a 2.75 GAA (Goals Against Average) in that span. He has shown signs that he is ready to make the move to the NHL. He made his NHL debut in 2024, but last season was very encouraging, as he was initially called up in January when illness invaded the Blackhawks’ locker room. In a very exciting way, he got his first NHL shutout in his third NHL start against the Nashville Predators.

The Blackhawks always think highly of Commesso and his potential. With his new deal, he gets a bigger chance to prove himself.

It looks like the Blackhawks’ goaltending team was filling out a bit with Spencer Knight as the team’s number one, Arvid Söderblom as the backup, and they signed Adam Gajan to an entry-level deal in April.

But according to general manager Kyle Davidson, he envisions Commesso fighting for a spot out of training camp. they’re going to accept that, and come and prove that they’re the ones who should be here to break camp, So, Drew’s part of that conversation, and we have a lot of faith in Drew, both now and down the road, so we’re excited to see him come in and try and push the place and show the NHL.

It will be an important training camp for Commesso, as he has a legitimate chance to fight for a role in goal support. Although the position has been Söderblom for the past three seasons, it is not set in stone. And Gajan will be Rockford bound next season, giving Commesso a clear path.

If he doesn’t make the Blackhawks out of camp, he’ll have Rockford, too. But what’s important about Commesso’s contract is that, even though it’s a two-man deal, the second year is a one-way contract, according to Commesso. PuckPedia.

Commesso’s Impression on Blackhawks

Head coach Jeff Blashill said of Commesso in March, about how he’s worked starting for the Blackhawks in a number of emergency situations, “It’s been great… Drew’s attitude has been great. I thought, coming out of camp, I thought we had good goaltenders in camp, and obviously Sodie and Knighter played really well for us. But he definitely also had full confidence in Drew. You know, the last two… obviously, his starts have been really good for him, so he’s very confident when he goes in there.

He had a 2.31 GAA and .918 SV% in three NHL games last season.

The goalkeeper competition will be watched. Commesso has never strayed from their radar, and is always ready.

Commesso shared after his closure in January, “That’s all. Yes, I’m blessed, and I’m very grateful to God for putting me in this situation, and I couldn’t have done it without Him. And I think the biggest thing has been my Faith and I always stay even with the keel, you know, when things go wrong and when things go right and I always thank Him, I thank Him and I thank Him.
