Major update on Guillaume Restes’ future comes as Ipswich storm into race

There has been a major update on the future of Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, amid interest from Ipswich Town and Aston Villa.

Despite only being 21 years old, Restes has been Toulouse’s first choice for the past three seasons, with scout Jacek Kulig suggesting he is one of the best young goalkeepers in the business.

Ipswich will go into the new campaign with the aim of staying in the Premier League, which means it is important to have a reliable goalkeeper, while Aston Villa will look to build on a good 2025-26 season, where they secured a return to the Champions League.

Football FanCast verdict

Honesty

Ipswich are widely known to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, having already landed Newcastle United’s Nick Pope. Current leading scorer Christian Walton has only played seven Premier League games, meaning that persisting with the Englishman could be dangerous.

Finance

Toulouse are ready to sanction a sale of at least €20m (£17m), which would be on the expensive side for the Tractor Boys, considering Jaden Philogene was their record signing for £20m in 2025. However, the goalkeeper is a must-buy from Villa, who will be financially boosted by a return to Europe’s top flight.

Understanding

Despite his young age, the youngster has made 107 appearances for Toulouse, and kept nine clean sheets in Ligue 1 last season, sixth highest in the division.

Impact

Walton is likely to be demoted if Restes arrives at Portman Road, while Alex Palmer may need to step up, as he is likely to become third-choice goalkeeper, despite starting last season as Kieran McKenna’s No.1. From Villa’s point of view, the Toulouse star could be considered as a long-term replacement for Emiliano Martinez, with the Argentinian turning 34 in September.

Ipswich have entered the race to sign Guillaume Restes

According to a report from L’Equipe (via Get Football News France), Ipswich have now joined Villa in the race to sign Restes, amid a major update on his future, as it is revealed that Toulouse are now willing to cash in at least €20m (£17m).

Napoli have also been in talks to sign the 19-capped France U21 international, but the French club have yet to find ‘concrete’ options.

Nick Pope might be a safer pair of hands than Guillaume Restes

Ipswich are looking at two goalkeepers who are at different stages of their careers. The leading player in Toulouse is still making a name for himself, but he was not one of the best shooters in Ligue 1 last season, recording only 65.4%, which ranked him 15th in the division.

Pope, on the other hand, is 34 years old, but has recorded a save percentage of 70.1% in the Premier League, while also averaging 3.3 saves per 90, compared to 2.6 for the Toulouse man.

In addition, the Newcastle star has already proven himself in the Premier League for a long time, making 248 appearances in the competition.

So, while Restes could be one for the future, Pope could be a safe bet for an Ipswich side whose main aim will be to avoid relegation next season.
