July 1st is fast approaching for the Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson to receive an extension

The Dallas Stars are trading for Jason Robertson at the July 1st deadline

JayOnSC: Pierre LeBrun on TSN with Jay Onrait, talking about Dallas Stars pending RFA winger Jason Robertson. Can he work out a contract before July 1st, as teams consider trading him or considering giving him sheets?

Onrait: “And probably the most interesting player there, Jason Robertson. We’re still waiting for the Stars to sign him, or maybe trade him, or maybe Pierre, are we finally getting that blockbuster piece we’ve all been waiting for, and wringing our hands for? What’s the latest on Jason Robertson?”

NHL Rumors: Puljujarvi, Flyers, Sharks, Robertson, Nikushkin, McTavish, and Senators

LeBrun: “Yeah, I think the offer sheet is something the Dallas Stars are concerned about to some degree. Because they don’t want to lose control over Jason Robertson, in terms of what his next contract looks like. It’s easy to say we’ll match anything, but not if it’s a number that doesn’t work for what you’re trying to do, right?

Remember, Dallas must re-sign Maverik Bourque, who is an RFA, though, another potential offer sheet candidate.

So I will say this, I mean, early on Wednesday, I know there were people who were speculating that the contract negotiations had gone so badly between Dallas and Jason Robertson that they were off the streets, and that Dallas was definitely going to trade them. I looked at a few different sources involved in that discussion. I was told it wasn’t. They haven’t finished talking. Both sides are determined to continue it here for the next few days, and try to find common ground regarding Jason Robertson’s extension.

  • NHL rumor mill: David Pagnotta on Leafs Morning Take on Robertson: “My understanding…Dallas went back to Jason Robertson’s camp last week with a promise…clearly unacceptable; the word is, $14+ a year, I’ve heard more than 15, and other teams are preparing to go that route, even the direction of the offer sheet.”

So they haven’t finished talking. Having said that, the Dallas Stars don’t have a choice, and I know from talking to other teams, they’re continuing to do their due diligence on the trade market to see, you know, how they can increase Jason Roberts, Jason Robertson’s trade value if they have to go draft B and trade him.

but like I said, the offer sheet threat, which is next July, next week, July 1st, that serves as the deadline for this whole Jason Robertson situation. So there are certain groups that, you know, are sitting back and waiting to see if they can jump into that situation. We will see.

Salary Cap Squeeze Fuels Aggressive NHL Trade Market Before Draft

I think Robertson really wants to stay in Dallas. I mean, it’s a team that knocks every year. But you know, for the Dallas Stars, I don’t think they can make him the highest paid player on the team, of course. This is where the question is now, from what I hear.

So, let’s see, you know, I always say deadlines are there for a reason. Everyone stops poker face and shows their real hand near the deadline. So we’ll see what happens with that.”
