Chelsea already have an agreement to sign Cucurella’s replacement

Chelsea do not like the taste of nature, but the 2025/26 campaign was neither encouraging nor successful for the Blues, who finished in tenth place in the Premier League.

Although Chelsea have had their fair share of good fortunes over the last decade or so, they feel that this incident is very important to the BlueCo government, their scattergun approach to the transfer market has failed to bring the right rewards: continued success at the highest level.

There is a dearth of top quality at Stamford Bridge, with Marc Cucurella and the future of Enzo Fernandez playing up to the point that new coach Xabi Alonso has his work cut out for him. Alonso needs to sign players who can emulate those who have reached the top in west London.

The heroes of old are no longer affecting things at Chelsea, and the sale of Cucurella, along with the possible exit of Fernandez this summer, requires precision in the transfer market over the next few months.

Chelsea have already agreed a deal to replace Cucurella

Cucurella, 27, has been “absolutely unbelievable” for Chelsea this season, but was always keen to leave after Chelsea finished 10th, thus ending their association with the European stage (for now).

Replacing him will not be easy, but it must be done.

Chelsea have been linked with Newcastle defender Lewis Hall in recent weeks, a player they have had on the books, and the 2022 Academy Player of the Season winner.

Hall is worth £70m, however, and Chelsea may already have agreed a deal for Cucurella’s full-fledged heir.

As for Athletic, Chelsea have agreed a deal with sister club Strasbourg for the versatile Valentin Barco, who can play as a left-back or in midfield.

The 21-year-old fits the bill, and although he has confirmed he is leaving Ligue 1 this summer, Chelsea have yet to confirm a deal, or even indicate that a deal has been completed.

Barco joined Strasbourg for £8m, and the figure paid by Chelsea to bring him to London is currently uncertain.

Why Barco could replace Cucurella at Chelsea

Barco, like Cucurella, had previously played for Brighton, but was too young and lacked the necessary experience to score the first goal in the Premier League.

However, 21-year-old Barco has established himself in France, and in 27 Ligue 1 games this season, he created 13 big chances and won 5.5 duels per game on average, with a success rate of 57%.

In that, he has shown he has what it takes to replicate Cucurella’s presence down the left, a solid and talented defender with a natural source of creativity to draw from. He’s athletic and mobile, and it’s worth noting that Chelsea’s Spanish star has been running regularly in the Premier League this season, completing just 33% of his attempts.

Snappy, canny full-backs are essential to Alonso’s style of play, which includes calculated build-up play and aggression fueled by wide players who create width up and down the touchline.

Barco might be a better fit for Alonso’s schedule. Yes, he is not that refined, and he is not accomplished and not experienced at the highest level. But Chelsea like to mold players to their style, and Barco will fit that style like a tailor-made glove.

Barco has spent most of his time in France as a midfielder, but his versatility is his greatest strength, and because he has been hailed as “Marcelo from Argentina” is a football talent scout Jacek Kulig In the past, it’s fair to say he knows what it takes to be an effective left-back.

Whether Barco earns more minutes under Lionel Scaloni in North America remains to be seen, but he has the potential to be a champion, and is a player who can fit into the BlueCo’s youth rotation strategy, while providing the maturity and experience that could help lift Chelsea back into the limelight.
