3 Takeaways from Devils Fans Inspired by Senators’ 4-3 OT Victory – Hockey Writers – New Jersey Devils

Despite not doing well this season, the New Jersey Devils took over Sunday evening with a little more meaning – not only was it their last home game of 2025-26, but it was the last time they wore the “Jersey Jersey”.

In front of a packed barn, they gave their fans (and the jersey) a send-off: a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory and Nico Daws’ first win in the NHL after 172 days.

Devils Overcome Impossible Goals With Help From Fans

In the first half, Dawson Mercer scored a goal. Dismissed because Timo Meier was offside by about half an inch ~15-20 seconds earlier.

In the third period, with the Devils down 3-2, Connor Brown made a nice deflection that seemed to go in. The player scored the goal and the Devils gathered to cheer. It didn’t quite cross the line – instead it hit under the crossbar.

Moments later, the puck came loose after a scramble and Jack Hughes put it into the open cage. Just one problem – the whistle blew because the referee believed the puck was fully covered by James Reimer, even though it wasn’t. So, there is no goal.

The last time the Devils had a ‘three-goal deficit’ in a game was Nov. 23, 2022, ironically when Sheldon Keefe’s Toronto Maple Leafs come to town. The Devils had three goals disallowed in that game which led to their fans throwing things on the ice, in what has been unfairly called the “Chicken Tender Game”.

While blowing things up and putting players and officials in danger is wrong, there is something that shows how much Devils fans care and want their team to win.

The Devils hung on and eventually tied it, before captain Nico Hischier won it in extra time. Keefe, now on the other side of it, gave a lot of love to the fans after the game:

“I mean, that was a great performance by our fans tonight. Looking at where we are and how the season has gone, for them to participate like they did in the game here today, I think that helped our guys go to the next level. I’m very happy for the players to carry them.”

However, it wasn’t all sunshine from Keefe – and rightly so: “The enthusiasm of the fans in that third period shows why this is so important that we get it right again [become] ongoing play-off team, so as much as I’m happy with how it went tonight, I’m very disappointed with where we are. [and that] we won’t have any more home games here in the finals.”

Jack Hughes Finally Reaches Coveted Milestone

Jack Hughes started his career with 51 points in 117 games. That meant he would be a point-per-game scorer and arguably among the best in the league, scoring 66 points. over point pace per game.

After several seasons of dominance, with unfortunate injuries and a Golden Goal in the middle, Jack reached that mark tonight with two assists – the latter with Hischier’s winner. He now has 428 points (168G, 260A) in 428 games.

“I’m not surprised,” Hischier, who scored the winner in overtime, said with a smile after the game. “I mean, if you look at the skill set, he can do everything. He can score. He can make plays very quickly (…) I’m not surprised that he’s a point-per-game player, because that’s what he is.”

Since making his debut, Jack joins only 21 other NHL players who have averaged a point per game or better (400 game minutes). And since 2022-23, his 1.22 points per game ranks sixth behind Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, Nathan MacKinnon, Leon Draisaitl and David Pastrnak.

Bye-Bye, Jersey Jersey

As the Devils left the ice for the last time and headed for their tunnel, a piece of Devils (and New Jersey) history went with them in the form of their jerseys that will never return. With their win tonight, they moved to 24-27-3 while wearing the jersey.

Earlier in the game, the Devils played a farewell video, while fans flashed their torches and sang “Good Riddance” by Green Day.

“It’s a nice looking jersey,” Keefe said. “Just the fact that it respects Jersey, the fact that we’re a Jersey team, I think that’s great. The fans responded unbelievable tonight and I’m glad they won and I hope for good memories of that jersey.”

As well as not reaching the semi-finals, the Devils home record was not good enough. They sported a 21-17-3 record at The Rock this season – a big reason they were given the first ticket of the summer. In fact, it has been a problem that has plagued them for a long time:

Since their franchise record 2022-23 season when they were 24-13-4 at home, they have gone 57-55-11 since then. But for a moment, all that didn’t matter to the 16,000+ fans who screamed with pure joy.

Moving Forward

The Devils – now 42-36-3 – will head to Boston to close out their season on Tuesday (7:00 PM EDT).
